Promoting Personal and Professional Development The field of human services is quite broad, as a number of professions actually fall under the umbrella of human services. Still, no matter what human service career path one follows, he/she is guaranteed to work with people, as helping others is a fundamental aspect of the human service field. To this end, it is vital that human service professionals be aware of what they do well and recognize what they still need to learn and master. Through self-assessment, one is able to better understand limitations that in turn bring to light opportunities for individual and professional growth. I truly have a passion for helping others. Being that I have faced numerous challenges myself, I admit that I have utilized a number of helping services throughout my lifetime. This spurred my desire to pay it forward, so to speak. I am committed to helping and bettering my community. I believe that my personal values will serve me well in this endeavor, as they will guide my interactions and relationships with clients and co-workers alike. Honesty, respect, integrity, and genuineness are central to my being. Ask anyone close to me what my number one pet peeve is and they will say dishonesty. Without honesty, there is no trust, which of course is at the foundation of relationships. Thus, I maintain truthfulness at every turn. I am an authentic person that strives to walk my talk. I believe the best strategy for bettering myself as a human service professional lies with increasing my knowledge, expertise and hands-on experience. To accomplish this, I can attend conferences, workshops, trainings and the like. Another option would be to gain skills through volunteering. I can also become a member of the National Organization for Human Services and read journals that are relevant to my field. I plan to seek a career mentor and one day be a mentor to others. I will solicit feedback, so that my strengths can be maximized and my weaknesses identified. I also plan to take on new responsibilities every chance I get and put myself in situations that push me out of my comfort zone. Of course, the ultimate improvement plan would include continuing my education, eventually earning my Master’s
