Self Analysis
My ascribed status is I am a white, female, a daughter, a sister, and an American. These are my ascribed statuses because they are things I cannot change, and they were not a result of any choices I have made. On the other hand, my achieved status would be that I am a student, a friend, an employee, a housekeeper, and a girlfriend. My achieved statuses are things that I have chosen to do; it depends on where I live, who I hang out with, the people I interact with, and what is out there for me. There are many roles and role expectations I have to live up to. I experience role strain when it comes to work; I often find myself upset by the idea of it. Sometimes, it takes a lot out of me mentally to work five days a week and go to school four days a week too, so at work I become irritable. As a friend, I am always expected to have a shoulder to cry on, always have the advice to offer, and have all the time in the world to hang out with my friends. I experience role strain in this situation too because I feel like I let my friends down when I cannot talk to them as much as I usually would. Last but not least, I am a girlfriend/housekeeper, I combine the two because being a housekeeper was something that was expected from me but never talked about. As a girlfriend, I am supposed to be compassionate, listening, supportive, loyal, and dutiful. The further my relationship progressed, the more I knew there was an unconscious expectation from him that I was in charge of the cooking and the cleaning. So, on top of all the schooling and work I do I have to maintain a clean household and always to make sure there is dinner on the table. My ascribed status is I am a Caucasian, female, American citizen, with lower class parents. This ascribed status places me in the lower class. With my achieved status I have enhanced my upward mobility, I have worked my way to the middle class. After moving out of my parents, I have a full-time job with benefits, and I am also pursuing an education, I do not have to rely on any form of government assistance. Technology has been a huge factor in enhancing my mobility. Now, it is easier than ever to pursue an education. Everything I need to succeed is literally in the palm of my hand, my
