Known as the Queen of Tejano Music, Selena Quintanilla-Perez allowed music to lead her into becoming one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century. Starting out as a very young girl, she flourished rapidly in the music industry. With albums receiving gold record status, Tejano awards of all sorts, the Grammy, etc., her thrill-filled career was unfortunately cut short when the president of her own fan club killed her. Her physical absence is felt, but Selena Quintanilla’s music still lives today. Selena Quintanilla was born April 16th, 1971 to her parents, Abraham and Marcella Quintanilla. Her music career began early around the age of eight. After completing high school, which was a correspondence school for artists, Selena enrolled at Pacific Western University in business administration correspondence courses. From 1957 to 1971, her father played in a Tejano band, Los Dinos, in which he taught his children how to sing in Spanish and play the drums and guitar. Selena became the lead singer and the family became a professional act. They moved to Corpus Christi where the music flourished and Los Dinos started performing in weddings and clubs.

Popularity was not the only way that she affected others. The Queen of Tejano considered herself a public servant. Dep Corporation (Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse) and Selena participated in educational videos. Those included My Music and Selena Agrees. She worked with the Coastal Bend Aids Foundation through the D.A.R.E. program, was scheduled for a Dallas-Fort Worth boys’ and girls’ club benefit, and also taped a public-service announcement for a shelter for battered women (Houston Area Women’s Center).
