Selena Quintanilla Perez was a Mexican American performer whose life was full of adventures with her family throughout her music career. Selena faced the troubles that had came with being a female, Latino entering the Tejano music business. Selena went from being just a young and courageous girl to being considered the “queen of Tejano music”.
Selena first began recording in 1984 in corpus Christi, Texas. She recorded with her family band which was made up of her brother A.B. Who played bass and her sister Suzette who played the drums. The band was the family’s main source of income after the family was evicted after the Texas oil bust of 1982. Selena y los dinos first started recording with an independent record company that released her first record in 1984. Her father wanted them to perform Tejano music, a male dominated genre or music, popularized by Mexican Americans in the United States.
Tejano music or Tex-Mex music is the name given to forms of folk and popular music originating from the Mexican-American populations of Central and Southern Texas. Selena was nominated for an ASCAP award and won it, nominated for 5 BMI awards and won them all, nominated for 16 billboard Latin American music awards and won 14, nominated for 3 Grammys and won 1, nominated 12 times for lo nuestro awards and won 10, nominated for 48 music awards and won 36. In total, that's 67 wins out of 86 nominations. In 1995 she was inducted into the billboard Latin music hall of fame.
