Born in the Bronx, New York City on July 24, 1969, in a Puerto Rican household Jennifer was searching for her big role that would make her a household name. According to biography.com, Jennifer danced on In Living Color, however, that did not ensue her a hit role. It was not until 1997 her big role came in the iconic movie, Selena. In an interview with the Today Show Jennifer says emotionally, “ it was a great thing for her to be my mentor in a way and for her to teach me so much about, yes how to navigate through this business, but also how to navigate through life…”

Selena was a popular Tejano singer, in an article by biography.com states that she won an award for best vocal female vocalist and performer of the year awards at the Tejano Music Awards in 1987. Her death was a sudden surprise; her fan club leader killed her. She died at the age of twenty-three and did not have a chance to see all that she dreamed of becoming a major star in both the English and Latin community. In an interview with billboard.com Jennifer says, “The fact that she was so young and doing all of these things that people go through that maybe she wasn't ready for. I felt she had a sense to live in the moment, that you're not ­promised tomorrow. For me, that was the ­biggest lesson. Selena helped Jennifer become the person she is today, in an interview with the Today Show she says while sitting backstage of the 2015 Latin Billboard Awards “…I decided after that first movie…” she continued as she sat glowing and in a white dress looking exquisite “… to make my first record and I did…” With that motivation even after twenty years later she is still going strong and achieving success.
