• It’s comparing works of art to every unique individual because all art is beautiful but not everyone might agree with that. They compare it to the light which is supposed to be teenagers hiding their true selves instead of being able to be proud of themselves. Similes are effective to use because they give the listener a better understanding and a visual of what the singer is trying to say by comparing familiar objects with the situation.

It seems, like, a weird comparison, but it fits the poem perfectly.…

Using similes can help the reader better understand what is being compared. Like in the fifth paragraph when Ascher says: “The mother grows impatient and pushes the stroller before her, bearing the dollar like a cross.” In this sentence the dollar and a cross are being compared. A cross is usually related with religion. Like religion, money is thought of as special and precious to those who have it.…

My first impression when I viewed Mouth (for L'Oréal), New York, by Irving Penn, was wow, it’s so beautiful and colorful. When you look at this picture, you see a person’s lips with several different lipstick colors on them. The subject of this painting is obviously the lipstick, the colors in the pictures are different shades of red, purple, pink and brown, they are the focus point. The lipstick makes texture on the lips, creating a beautiful three-dimensional effect. I see several lines in this picture, mostly curved lines, there are no definite lines and the forms I see are basically the lips, nose and lipstick.…

The comic, Watchmen, by Alan Moore and Dave Gibson, employs a reoccurring symbol of a smiley face stained with blood covering its left eye. This reoccurrence of the symbol suggests that there is more to it than what the eye meets. It is such a simple symbol that shows happiness, yet is presented in such a convoluted manner in the comic. The smiley face in Watchmen is used ironically throughout the text to show how the characters, and perhaps all humans try to overlook or falsify violence, reality, and immorality, and further shows that these characteristics can’t be covered up. Additionally, the symbol suggests that we live in a pretense world where we try to find happiness, by ultimately happiness is unobtainable because there will always…

Spotlights In almost every piece of literature you find certain words or descriptive objects that point towards a meaning that the author is trying to convey. Although sometimes one can look right over them and not notice them at all. These symbols play a key role in helping to move along a piece, as well as to help expose any meaning the author is hoping to expose. One such meaning is from “The Pardoner’s Tale,” Geoffrey Chaucer, which takes place and was written during the middle ages. This short story focuses on a group of highly intoxicated friends, who after seeing their deceased friend pass by decide to hunt down and kill death.…
