Keeper’n Me, an award-winning book by Richard Wagamese, introduced an original perspective into the way the Indigenous peoples see the world around them. The author gave his own unique narrative, partly based on his own experiences as an Ojibway hailing from the Wabaseemoong First Nation in Northwestern Ontario (Smith, 1994). In addition to writing Medicine Walk (2014), Dream Wheels (2006), Ragged Company (2009), and Indian Horse (2012), the 59-year-old author, born in 1955, has been recognized with numerous awards. My responsibility for this workshop was to proceed with a handover of a patient to an intern (played by Dr. Michael Adamson). This was a particularly disasterous session. Case Study Carson Jones is a student that I have been observing and working with this semester. As I have grown older I have gained a greater appreciation for my own mother and commend her for raising three very confident and self-sufficient women. However, the confidence my own parents instilled is sometimes the thing that makes it difficult for me to be able to put myself in others shoes. As I read the excerpt, “What Should You Say When Your Child Tells You Someone Is Being Mean to Them?” I realized that the advice I have always given the same advice that always worked for me, does not help every situation. As a first year I found myself being one of the youngest if not the youngest one in ASAM 230. Although most of the students in ASAM 230 were seniors, this course would be most helpful to students in their second or third year of college. The assignments we are asked to read, write and discuss in class are directed to help students recognize their interests. For example, reading about Community-Based organizations and becoming more knowledgeable on how they are coordinated can be essential to a student who is still trying to decipher what they want to do with their college career. The novel, Kindred, exposed me to the un- taught lifestyles of the southern people during slavery. It left me with questions, jaw dropping moments, and surprises, but yet not, of the life styles that were practiced during the 1800s that today we might see in different forms. One event that troubled me the most was reenactment of the slave market. Kevin and Dana were walking away from the Weylin’s home and slave quarters to talk in private when they saw slave children reenacting a slave market. I have mixed feelings on how to react to Wolters’ writing. Wolters takes what may seem like something that all reformational Christians should already know and reinforces this classical worldview in a useful way. Over this past spring semester, I have obtained a total of 75 hours of field experience in the CCC Childcare UPK 1 classroom. My overall impression of the experience is that it truly exposed me to what it’s like caring for and teaching young children, and all the responsibility that accompanies it. I truly enjoyed my time in the UPK 1 classroom and after being there six hours a week, sometimes more, I feel a genuine connection to these children and the classroom. This entire experience taught me a lot, not only about early childhood education, but about myself and what I’m capable of. Before S.O.L the only club I had been a part of was Heath Occupation Students of America (H.O.S.A) a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO). The book “The Big Time” was written by Tim Green centered towards a younger audience and written as a sports fiction book. The protagonist, Troy, a young football standout who’s life is absorbed in football, in the most basic level, and even on the most extreme level in the NFL. He has a mind unlike any other kid his age or adult for that matter. He has the ability to read the offensive patterns set during a game before the play even begins. As he examines the formation and he sees how the linemen are set, he can predict the play, and is almost always perfect in his predictions.…
When I found out about the See It Be It programme, I felt an immediate connection. It struck me not only as an amazing opportunity to acquire new tools to advance professionally but also as the spark of a transformation I am eager to be part of. I try to raise my colleagues’ awareness on gender equality at every chance I get (from speaking up against sexist ideas to recommending female applicants for job openings), but I feel that such suggestions are often brushed off despite my conviction that this is an urgent matter. I firmly believe that the endorsement of an empowering initiative like SIBI can make my voice heard when it would otherwise be ignored.
