Seiba Honor Band

Improved Essays
This past Saturday I had the great honor of attending the South East Iowa Honor Band (SEIBA) auditions, a prestigious competition where music students from all of southeast Iowa have the opportunity to undergo an intense audition process including, but not limited to, arthritis from excessive preparation, mental breakdowns, glares from judges that could kill you with one look, and sugar overdoses from their wide variety of healthy options available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the concession stands. Alright, it’s not actually that intense, but you get the picture. This day is full of excitement and nerves and disappointment as one five minute audition stands between months of hard-work and your personal goals. Sadly enough, as important …show more content…
I’m not talking about wearing a dress vs dress pants, heels vs flats, or even tie vs bow-ties. I AM talking about the people who show up to a music competition wearing shoes with music notes printed on them, or better yet, an entire dress with the print of a music staff. Now ordinarily, these clothing items may be viewed as unique or singular and I may agree so myself in the common day setting. But at a music competition, its excessive. TBO clothes are just screaming for attention. “Look at me! I play music!” Yes we all do. “Look how devoted I am to my craft!” Yes, the rest of us are also devoted, just without plastering it all over ourselves. This idea applies to any music related clothing article, such as the girl playing the saxophone while wearing a saxophone pin, we get it. Likewise, an astonishing accessory common among TBO are medals. This past weekend, I witnessed four people wearing an allstate medal around their necks. Knowing personally myself what an honor it is to have an allstate medal presented to you, I have mine proudly hung up in my room, not hung around my neck, bragging about my abilities (allstate is the highest level honor band you can be accepted into during high school). Other outfits may be worn by TBO, such as the gentleman I saw on Saturday who was obviously auditioning for SEIBA jazz, as he looked like he had just come from a recent poetry slam that played smooth jazz over the radio; You know what I’m talking about, with the scarves and hats and attitude of sophistication. In the end, TBO clothing is just another outlet for them to draw attention to

The percussion section of our band was preparing to lose a large number of seniors by the next fall. As freshmen, we had to prove that we could hold our own and continue to represent our section and our band as a whole with complete and utter confidence. During freshman year, we are allowed to compete in a band festival known as the Elkhorn Band Olympics. Anyone who wants to go to E.B.O. is allowed, as long as they are able to prepare a solo, duet, or ensemble. There are numerous students from the surrounding area that sign up to perform at this festival, so ranking high in your designated room is a big deal.…

The aggie band began its roots with Joseph Holick, a campus cobbler, who arranged the Aggie Band in 1894, and after 4 directors and years of work on marching and precision maneuvers the Aggie Band has become an irreplaceable and important aspect of the Texas A&M culture (1). Therefore, it was essential for the band’s informal performance at Rudder Fountain to showcase this important aspect of Aggie culture, and remind everyone they are in the presence of the “Nationally Famous Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band.” The culture of Texas A&M is very different compared to other universities, it is rooted in agricultural and military beginnings, and these military beginning play a huge role in shaping the band’s performance and attire. The Corps of Cadets are regarded as “Keepers of the Spirit” and maintain that record with ensuring traditions and the culture is upheld and taught. Furthermore, the last song played by the aggie band on February 11 was the Aggie War Hymn; however, the most fascinating portion of the performance of the Aggie War Hymn, was that the band members immediately quit playing and joined in arms and legs and sang the hymn.…

In high school, I remember where my biggest dream changed into a reality. I was a member of the Greenville High School Tiger Pride Marching Band. I played the alto saxophone. The unique opportunities and skills that music offers are essential. These skills include “creative thinking… collaboration… the ability to listen” and “the power to focus on the present and the future simultaneously” (Lipman, 2013, para. 4). Although these are all skills that can be developed in other activities, music is an effective way to practice all of these skills over years of practice. The appeal to pathos that Lipman uses is that she appeals to the fear of missing out. Her argument is strengthened through the argument that those who do not practice music during their life miss out on such great qualities such as “creative thinking” and…

We received a performance from the top talent, whom she performed her top songs and shared her tactics at succeeding in the music industry. The intensity of her presence and her determination was what struck my attention, as this represents similar to that of an Olympic Athlete. This was clear when the performer described her development as training, and outlined how critical it is that she remains focused to better achieve her goal.…
