Danielle, I agree with you that the segregation in Charleston had gone too far. It was 2008 before anything was done about it. That is too long for such a practice to be performed. The reason for this was the parents, as you said. They wanted to keep with tradition, so, they kept segregated the only thing they could, the prom. However, the students have been attending school together their whole lives. Most of them accepted any person, regardless of race. As you said, the students who did convey racism were influenced by the parents. I think that they were mostly afraid that their parents would disown them and so, they had to have racist attitudes. This does not make it right, however. Equality definitely plays a huge role in the film. It

Instead of educating the students on racial disparity the teachers promoted racial segregation. One teacher admitted placing the “rednecks” and the black students on opposite sides, stationing herself in the middle of the classroom to suppress conflict between the two (Hardie 2013). The advanced classes consisted of 98 percent of middle class white students while the “rednecks”, Hispanics and black students attended the classes that were not big on academics showing the racial disparity in the classrooms. The school furthermore showed disparities handing out tardy slips. The black students were likely to receive a slip for coming to class late, even if entering as the bell’s ringing.…

Racism and segregation are the two main themes of the novel and are the characteristics that all characters are defined. The community is split between people who fear and hate (such as the members of the jury who convicted an innocent man of rape because of his colour), and those like Atticus and Calpurnia who show understanding and sympathy towards those who might be different or less fortunate. Those traits are carried onto Jem and Scout. For example, when Scout brings Walter home for dinner and then mocks his table manners, Calpurnia scolds her and says that "all guests should be treated with respect no matter what their social station". Atticus also makes decisions based on behavior and not their background.…

At the beginning of the novel in the epigraph the words of Charles Lamb were displayed by Lee stating, “Lawyers, I suppose, were children once.” Within her novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee establishes the idea that children are free from the racism of American society as they maintain their innocence until their moral education begins. She weaves into the novel that the transition to adulthood in the early nineteenth century in America, especially in the South, caused the development of unethical views of African-Americans by white Americans as part of the instillment of societal values. In contrast to this ideology, Lee crafts Atticus, a lawyer, as a model of pristine morality to emphasize the depravity that segregation produced. Thus,…
