Segregation In Remember The Titans

Race and Segregation have always been a part of society for as long as one can remember. 2015 compared to the 1960’s is a big change in how people view each other based on their color of skin or their background. This topic leads me to the movie Remember the Titans. In Remember the Titans the importance of equality, friendship, and desegregation is the key point of the movie. When watching this movie viewers take away the value of appreciating one human being for not their quality of life or skin tone but in their self being and their beliefs of the world.
In Remember the Titans it starts off with the 1971 Caucasian T.C. Williams Football team. An African American Coach Herman Boone is offered to head coach for that team which opens doors for other colored students to play. As the movie progresses it is clear that the white and the colored do not get along one bit, but throughout their summer football camp before their season starts they learn to respect one another. Of course in the beginning of their two week camp there are occasional fights, but in the second week they learn that their not different from one another. When they return to the beginning of the

In a scene where the boys are in the locker room a new team mate Sunshine kisses Gerry the captain in front of everyone else. In the 1970's Gay, lesbian, etc were speaking out and pushing for equal rights as well. As soon as Gerry was kissed he tried to hit sunshine and he did not succeed. Personally this statement that sunshine makes represents what the gay community was trying to reach across to viewers. That they shouldn't be stereotyped and be left to live a comfortable normal life. This is another point that Remember the Titans tries to

In the early to mid 1900’s racism was a problem in the United States of America, where minority groups were treated poorly for being apart of a minority. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the many people to help abolish segregation, and he was supporting all minorities not just the black people. Remember the Titans took place during this time of segregation. The Titans-football team- was the only team in the state to have black and white americans play together. Coach Boone got rid of segregation on his team by 1 getting the players to get along, 2 he got them to respect each other, and 3 getting them to judge each other on their skill and personality instead of their skin color.…

Remember the Titans represents the story of the newly integrated T.C. Williams High School and its undefeated football team that won the 1971 Virginia State AAA Championship. Already at a boiling point, racial tensions threaten to erupt when the school board names Herman Boone, an African American, as head coach, passing over local favorite Bill Yoast, who is white. In the film, it appears as though federal mandate forced two schools, one white and one black, to consolidate, which created the Alexandria school in 1971. In reality, T.C. Williams opened in 1965 with an integrated student body. Yet the opening voiceover tells viewers, “up until 1971 in Alexandria, there was no race mixing,” which further heightens its inaccuracies (Schultz,…

As a former football player I can tell you that on that field, we are not a team, we are a family. Some of us hate each other and some of us are best friends, but when the game stands tall we are brothers.
