Segregation In American Society

Even though legislation says everyone is equal but it is clear that the American society supports keeping the black community suppressed. History is repeating itself because not everyone agrees that all people are equal. During the 1960’s president Johnson supported the blacks but it did not go well. There were many riots in different places in the United States since the blacks were not treated equally. In today’s society there are still many riots happening because the blacks are still treated differently. President Johnson tried to introduce to Congress, The Great Society to support the blacks. In May 1964, he stated that “...the Great Society that demands an end to poverty and racial injustice…” (Kerner). On March 1, 1968 the president introduced Kerner Commission to the Congress. During this time, there were riots because blacks thought it is injustice the way they were treated. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. believed that blacks should protest peacefully but some civil rights activists disagreed with his ideas (Civil Unrest). Many riots happened in the Northern and Western cities. In Harlem, New York 1964, a policeman shot a black teenager when they were arguing, then there was a riot. In Newark, New Jersey 1967, a black cab driver was pulled over and badly beaten by the police. Many blacks saw what happened and got angry. Things got out of control and stores were burned down. A policeman was killed and the governor sent in the National Guard allowing them to use their weapons. Some people died, many got injured and got arrested (Civil Unrest). Some blacks violently protested since they thought their voices were not heard enough and they were not treated equally with the whites. They thought if they protested something might
