However, Candidate Jennings very rarely made eye contact with his fire team as he briefed the order as if hiding behind his notes. Candidate Jennings briefed the incorrect grid for the "current location" of the fire team, even after asking the instructor to repeat the grid on more than one occasion to confirm their "current location". Perhaps the single, most common answer to the question of the purpose of school is that it is to shape young minds in preparing them for the future. For some, school is where they go learn skills and techniques useful in the work world. For others, they are just forced to go to school, to be hassled with the burdens of overwhelming assignments, which deprive them of their ever so fulfilling social lives and other salient priorities. However, for the students in Crenshaw High School, school was a sanctuary, a safe haven; the only place where they felt accepted, worthy and optimistic. Emile Durkheim’s functionalist theory can be applied to the movie The Ron Clark Story. Functionalism is a theoretical framework in which society is viewed as composed of various parts, each with a function that, when fulfilled, contributes to society’s equilibrium. This movie is based on a true story about a teacher who moved from teaching in North Carolina to Harlem, New York to teach at one of its schools. He asked to teach the most disruptive class, which had been labeled as hopeless and impossible to control. Mr. Clark had a difficult time with the class for most of the movie, but through determination and understanding, he eventually turned the worst class in the school into a well-behaved class who scored outstandingly high on their…
