1. Sedentary Farmers- The Spartans did not farm per say themselves, or for what is known they didn’t farm at all; Spartan land was farmed through rain fed irrigation. They had slave like people known as Helot’s that tended the land in and around Sparta, it is believed by many historians that the Spartans had more slaves or helots than any other Greek city state. Helots provided food for Sparta’s citizens to eat and trade. These Helots were required to provide half of their crops to the so called lords that were in their area that they lived. The Helots raised pigs and goats along with fishing for meat. They also gathered fruits and dried them along with nuts and olives; Helots also farmed wheat, barley, and grapes.
