Secular World View Of Education Essay

Improved Essays
Education is knowing God and His purpose for your life and then being able to follow His will in obedience. This definition was not an easy one to come up with, and to most it will not make sense. Education can be anything depending on what your world view is. I take a biblical stance in the way I view the world and everything in it. The secular world view sees a person’s education as how much a person is worth, or how successful that person is. The way you look at the world is the way you perceive education.
Webster’s dictionary defines education as, “the training of one’s mind; knowledge attained by instruction; the art of teaching” Webster seems to be heading in the right direction. Can one person define what education is? Is Education subject to change depending on what is being talked about? The secular world view imagines a well-educated person to be a graduate of a prestige university, or to be a part of a socially accepted group. We base educational levels

Specifically, in relation to church ministry. Should a minister be formally educated? This argument was between the pastor and the youth leader at my church. The youth leader did not feel that the pastor was taking him serious because he did not have a biblical degree. The pastor’s view was that a minister should pursue a formal degree if possible. Obviously the youth leader thought that he was not defined by a degree. Now, I was close to the youth leader and respected him and his knowledge of the bible. I immediately took his side and fanned the flame burning in him. It wasn’t until I searched the Scriptures and talked with the pastor that I came to an understanding. I listened to the pastor’s reasoning and saw that he was sincere with his thoughts and I actually agree with him now. This experience has taught me the trust the Holy Spirit as I read the Bible and not to count out a solution based on my own

In order to support his title as a pastor, Greider makes sure to utilize ethos by quoting scripture from the Bible, ancient philosophers, former U.S. Secretary of Education William Bennett, and William Kilpatrick, who was a major icon in the progressive education movement. Stating the scriptures reassures readers that Greider is indeed knowledgeable with the Bible and is able to apply it to support his writing. In this case, the biblical verses adhere to his religious audience members. They are looking to see how the author can utilize the words of the Lord to help them rear polite, morally sound children. Once readers are able to notice that a pastor can utilize the Bible into everyday life, they are more likely to trust his words, thus giving him credibility and reliability.…

Ronald Allen’s book, Thinking Theologically: The Preacher as Theologian, allowed me to understand why pastors preach and look at their congregations the way they do. To be frank, I never thought about a pastor as a theologian. It is clear pastors have their own specific theology but I did not pay attention to the way pastors brought their theology in the way they preach and observe their congregation and world.…

The knowledge we learn in school is spit back out to us within the workforce of our soon to be jobs. We accept the knowledge that we are taught because that is what adults older and wiser than us tell us. We take that knowledge into the world and find ways of proving it to be true for ourselves. Specific education teaches us about one area of interest. Let’s take religion for example as an area of interest to study.…

Acts such as sexual immorality cannot be allowed to continue and Pastors should step down if they have engaged in that sin (Willimon, 2000, p.72). Pastors who take on any task merely because it seems important, and Pastors who accept special treatment also demean the significance of their role (Willimon, 2000, p.113). There are two other concepts that I learned that I feel go hand in hand. One is humor and the other is speaking truth. Another concept that I learned was the importance of humor.…

Pastors must be servant-leaders and not lord it over their flock. Gregory presents important points with much wisdom that pastors would do well to follow as an example. There are some (many) who should not be in pastoral ministry because they lead their flock astray. This is due to the fact that there are pastors who do not have sound doctrine which leads to wolves invading the flock. One must be called into pastoral ministry by God in order to do this important work.…

He set out several years ago to identify some of the problems that exist in theological education and preparing pastors for the future. In all his strudies he has discovered that people do not go to church to learn about politics, movements, or conflict management. Leith says that they come “to hear about what God has done for human beings and for their salvation, to hear the Christian hope in the presence of death.”…

Since the first day of class, we have been discussing what it means to be an educated person and what qualifies you to be one. There are so many answers to that question and everyone will have a different point of view about it. An educated person can be anyone who just graduated high school, a doctorate student, or even a college dropout; the possibilities are endless and there is not one straight forward definition of what an educated person is. To me an educated person is a person who is engaged in the world, open to accepting new thoughts and ideas, and is willing to learn from past and future experiences as well as educational opportunities.…

By this definition, one might argue that being educated means that you are trained or specialized to do only one thing. I believe as well as many others I have talked to about this subject that an education constitutes far more than just being trained or specialized to do one thing. I do not believe you can confine education to a single definition from a dictionary. I will be the first to admit that certain majors or degrees will set you up to be one-dimensional and specialized for one thing.…
