Era Of Good Feelings Sectionalism Analysis

Shortly before the start of James Monroe’s presidency and after the War of 1812, a historical period known as the “Era of Good Feeling” commenced in America. During the Era of Good Feelings, the country utilized the driving force of nationalism to unify itself through its time of prospering and developing as a nation. However, territorial and state rights were extremely imperative for the country's political agenda. The question of sectionalisms effect has not as often been discussed even though sectionalism was an influential factor in both economics and politics. During this time period, tariffs and the rising debate of slavery caused for a numerous amount of conflicts in the country, while the one party system that had been established managed to appease many of these conflicts to a certain degree. Events that occurred, such as the introduction of the market economy in America, brought economic benefits to the north and increased the nationalistic attitude in the county, while the South Nullification Crisis, prefigured the South’s …show more content…
The result of long standing controversy over slavery lead to this war in the U.S.. Eleven states declared secession from the U.S. to form the Confederate States of America, while the states that remained loyal, were known as the North. This conflict was one of the most bloodiest wars ever recorded and in the end, the Confederacy fell and slavery was abolished. This lead to the Reconstruction Era, which was a time period that involved the process of obtaining unity as a nation once again. Both nationalism and sectionalism contained strong economic and political factors of the era and both unified people, whether it was under nationalism or sectionalism.
