Writing the candidate work sample during my special education placement required a great deal of planning. I wanted my students to be able to distinguish, understand, and preform different social skills concepts that were taught during my placement. Social skills such as whole body listening, expected behavior, unexpected behavior, little problem, big problem, social detective skills, and the 5-point scale. I figured that these concepts were to be taught at a basic level of understanding; however, the lessons were to be interactive as well as address the strengths and needs of each students determined from the pre-assessment. I did anticipate for this to happened, due to the disability of each student. As I moved on to the interactive activity of the lesson, I noticed that more students were participating and excited to complete the activity. Throughout the lesson, I noticed that some of my students struggled to distinguish between expected and unexpected behavior in a classroom environment. In addition, some students got distracted with the commotion that was going on in the room. I found myself redirecting the students when they got distracted; other than that, I had no issues on participating in the lesson. During the lesson only one student had one-on-one assistance provided by a paraprofessional. Furthermore, the students finished the activity successfully, they were able to identify and distinguish expected and unexpected behaviors in the classroom and home environment. There was an incident with a student made me question whether the lesson was effective or not. It turns out, that one of my students had a sensory overload near the end of the lesson. I decided to keep the lesson going, thinking that the student was going to calm down. I had to interfere and pull that student aside to have her calm down. Once I concluded the lesson, my university supervisor pulled me aside and the first thing she asked me about was regarding the student who had a meltdown.
