The English (protestants) were anti-Catholicism (Irish). One of the reasons for the anti-Catholic sentiment was the issue of loyalty to the British Empire and Catholics could be suspected of disloyalty due to their loyalty to the Pope. This climate of mistrust and bad feelings impacted the way education developed and social welfare was organised in Australia. The first world war raised the question of national interest and loyalty, brining more mistrust between the Protestants and Catholics. The proposed conscription method put forward in 1916 by labour party prime minister William Hughes split the nation. Non Labour (Protestant) was for conscription and Labour (Catholics) were against conscription. There was a difference in the way the war was viewed, Protestants saw the war as a holy war and Catholics saw the war in terms of political and economics.
