Secrets In The Hobbit

Secrets have become a social norm in the world today; they are humanity’s natural habit (Pattern1). Found in normal discourse, entertainment and literature, secrets damage relationships, further plots, and cause conflicts. J.R.R. Tolkien fabricated a character with such a secret in his novel The Hobbit. Bilbo Baggins, his character, found Sauron’s One Ring of Power in a cave and hid its existence from all other characters throughout the book. Bilbo’s secret concerning the Ring of Power significantly furthers the plot through his relationships with Gandalf the Grey, the Company of Dwarves, and the dragon Smaug. As a mentor figure, Gandalf the Grey Wizard always cared for Bilbo and protected him from danger. Gandalf believed in Bilbo even when Thorin and the other dwarves did not for he said, “‘Let’s have no more argument. I have chosen Mr. Baggins and that ought to be enough for all of you…There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a great deal more than he has any idea of himself. Bilbo executed his role as burglar exquisitely and managed to steal the Arkenstone from Smaug because of the invisibility gifted to Bilbo by the Ring. Smaug was able to decipher where Bilbo was hiding inside his lair because of his scent, not sight, for Bilbo trumpeted, “‘I am he walks unseen!’” The Dwarves knew not of Bilbo’s secret Ring, nor of his discovery and liberate of the treasured Arkenstone.
