The Secret Life of Bees is set in a time zone. It’s set in 1924 in South Carolina. A lot of things happened in 1924, one of them is the Racial Integrity Act. No one likes black people in this book. I will prove it to you: So Rosaleen is Lily’s maid, she is black. Rosaleen was in jail because she spit at a group of white people while trying to get in to vote. She always asks her mother for forgiveness. Later in the novel, Lily tells August about her mother and finds out that August raised her mother, Deborah, right there in the Pink House. She starts to tell her everything: Deborah married T. Ray only because she was pregnant with Lily. Lily now thinks that she’s a unwanted child. Deborah did leave Lily. She left her with T. Ray and went to August’s house. Lily ponders over why people are so hard to forgive. Before Lily can become full and love herself again, she has to forgive herself for killing her mother. And that it was an accident that she can no longer think. She has to move on with her life, there’s nothing she can do about the past. Lily does become close to forgiving herself, and her father when she chooses to stay at the Boatwright house. Lily understands that her father really did love Deborah. But she does end up never coming back to see her father. Forgiveness is an important part of the novel because it’s all Lily has to do to move on with her life. For a long time, Lily wanted to talk to August because she wanted to get some answers. I do know that there is many other themes that may be just as important as this theme, but this one stands out the most in my
