There are many secret meanings to words and things all throughout The Secret Life of Bees. In this novel, the title relates to the book in a way that might take the readers by surprise. The bees have a secret life outside of making honey, it’s a life humans just don’t understand. A bee hive represents people working together. The hive is overseen by the queen, which acts as a mother to the bees. When the queen bee dies she can be replaced, even though all the bees are lost without her. If the queen is replaced quick enough the bees will be perfectly fine. This relates a lot to the character Lily when her mother died. When she found August she found a alternate mother figure and she too was perfectly fine. Just like the bees are living a secret life Lily is also living a secret life away from …show more content…
The bees are a huge symbol in the novel. The bees working together symbolizes that without each other the hive would not function. In the book, "The Daughters of Mary" rely on each other to function also. Another form of symbolism throughout the novel is the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary was a symbol as a mother figure to the Daughter's of Mary, especially for Lily. After Lily's mother died, she was in need of a mother figure. Even though August and Rosaleen served as wonderful physical mothers, the Virgin Mary provided Lily a way to express herself when she was feeling lost. Usually Lily would begin to feel lost and lonely at night when things were quiet and no one was around. But Mary was always there for Lily. Mary represented a mother figure for Lily. The wailing wall for May was also very symbolic. The wall represented the sorrow and hurt May experienced throughout her lifetime. When May was upset she would place all of her feelings on pieces of paper and place them in the cracks of the wall. This symbolized the hurt and sorrow May was going through before she took her own

I knew that there is no way that the book is actually about the lives of bees. I wanted to find out what it really meant. I read that it was set in South Carolina and was about a 14 year-old girl named Lily.…

Which is something that was seen in both the queen bees as well as the tough cookies. The real differences between these two group and their literary practices both in and out of school seem to lay in their identities which stem from their home lives. For the queen bees in entering junior high their parents supported the girls’ decisions to be social and viewed the changes in their behavior as normal. While for the tough cookies their parents placed emphasis on being successful in school as well as learning to be independent. From the emphasis being on socialization the practices and behavior reflect this, for the queen bee’s everything is about peer approval and maintaining their status.…

Using symbols in stories creates a mood or emotion to try and represent something else of a character, a situation, or an object. “A dead cucumber-vine dangled from the porch like the drape streamer tied to the door for a death, and the thought flashed through Ethan's brain: “ If it was there for Zeena—“ (Wharton, 45). The dead cucumber-vine metaphorically represents the death of Zeena who might get taken away eventually by her ailement. It almost seems as if Ethan desperately wants for Zeena to die. Her lingering presence in the house does nothing but bring an eerie dread within the household.…

Symbolism is used many times throughout literature but many people are using symbolism incorrectly. They are expecting it to only hold one meaning, well they're wrong. Set in California near the Salinas River during The Great Depression, the novel begins when two grown men come looking in search of new jobs on a ranch. In Thomas C. Foster’s How to Read Literature Like a Professor and John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, both the authors use symbolism to show that it is related to an action or event experienced through individuals imaginations with a possible range of meanings and interpretations. In chapter 12 of Foster’s text, he uses caves and rivers as symbols of various interpretation and meanings that can only be understood using the tools, such as; questions, experiences, history, pre…

The ending means a new beginning for Lily, a rebirth of sorts. She will now truly be a Daughter of Mary. She will now work full time on the bee farm, and most importantly, be a true Boatwright. There is such a contrast between her previous life with T- Ray and her life now in Tiburon. For one, she went ten years with no mother, only Rosaleen and T- Ray (although you could say Rosaleen was a mother of sorts).…

The novel “The Secret Life of Bees” deals with important social issues. To Kill a Mockingbird is filled with symbolism used to display different themes. A major symbol is the mockingbird. Mockingbirds are harmless creatures that just sing and make the world a happier place. Lee uses three main characters that resemble greatly to mockingbirds to get her subtle, but imperative points across. One of these mockingbirds is forced to meet his maker, another is forced is forced to kill, and the last mockingbird’s innocence is forced to slowly die.…

Another use of symbolism is, again, in the kitchen scene. The flowerpot that was hanging in the kitchen was knocked over. This could be interpreted as a symbol of the breaking point of the relationship. The couple had enough of one another and began to turn things to the worse scenario, fighting over their kid. Children, like in this example, become the middle ground for many situations between parents and often are the ones to suffer the…
