Typed Revision 1 Ruthless and greedy are just two of the many words that could describe the two fathers from the book, Secret Life of Bees written by Sue Monk Kidd, and the song, “Oh Father” sung by Madonna. Lily, the protagonist of the book, is a thirteen year old girl living a life of abuse and torture. Lily lost her mother when she was very young and since then Lily has wanted to know more about her mother, Deborah. Similarly, the girl in “Oh Father” lost her mother and is mistreated, as seen in the music video. The connection between the two works share a strong link with the topic of forgiveness. Similarly to the girl in “Oh Father”, Lily wants to forget her dreadful past and memories of her mother. The book quotes, “People can start out one way, and by the time life gets through with them they end up completely different. I don’t doubt he started off loving your mother. In fact, I think he worshipped her” (293). This quote is directed towards T.Ray and his toxic relationship with Deborah, also known as Lily’s mother. It shows how T.Ray loved Deborah so much it turned into greed for her presence. Comparably, the music video depicts a man visiting a grave which hints at a strong relationship with that specific someone.
