Secret Life of Bees is told in the form of a book and a movie. They both tell the story in different unique ways, while keeping the general plot the same. The love story between Lily and Zac has the same feel to it in both the movies and the book. Lilly first sees Zach working in the honey house, singing to all the jars like elvis in both the book and the movie. They bond throughout the story as they share their experiences and get to know each other more. However it’s always clear that even though they love each other they cannot be together because their skin color is different. At the end of both stories they kiss and promise each other that they will find a way to be together regardless of their race.
Not only is racism a big part in the love story between Zach and Lily, but it’s also a theme throughout the entire plot in both the Movie and the book. When Lily and Rosaline are walking to town, Rosaline get’s harassed by a group of white men. They insult her and stand in her way. She tells them that she’s going to vote and they stand in her way. Then Rosaline pours her black spit on their shoes. They attack her, and demand that she apologizes. When the police come it’s clear that the white men were the guilty ones, but Rosaline is arrested because she is a black
