Secret life of bees by Sue Monk Kidd tells a story of a adolescent girl in search of the truth about her mother. Lily, the main character in this book, runs away to Tiburon south carolina on her way she breaks Rosaleen, her black maid out of jail and head to Tiburon. Lily’s motivation for leaving is founded on this one picture her mother left behind. Which leads her to a bee farm where she is asked to live there with three sisters named May, August and June. As the book goes on Lily’s thoughts and opinions began to change from the influences and diversity that surround her within that household. As lily continues to live on the bee farm she witnesses the suicidal death of May. The policeman come to investigate and come over to lily and ask “why are you living with them.” (198) she is shocked at the policeman’s question Lily says to him “why not.” The setting of the book is during Civil Rights in 1964 so it wasn’t acceptable for white and black people to associate. In the beginning Lily would have thought nothing of the policeman's statement but now that she has a new lifestyle and influences it changed her mindset.
The theme is also represented through plot structure which conveys don’t be afraid of change. T-Ray lily’s father goes searching for her and finds her. He tries to convince her to come back she refuses he grabs her and pulls out knife and shouts out “Deborah.” Lily’s realize that his mind he has gone back ten years when her mom tried to leave. Lily shouts “It’s me lily, Daddy Daddy”(295) suddenly he drops everything and just stares at her. This give her and her father closure about her mother's disappearance and death.
