Secondhand Stories

Have you ever wanted to write something but couldn't find the words? Now you can with blackout poetry! Blackout poetry was created by Austin Kleon during a case of writer's block. So, he took out a newspaper and started outlining words and phrases that he liked. Then, using a black marker, he blacked out the unnecessary text. As a result, he created a new story.

All you need is a pencil and a marker.

How it works:
Grab a pencil and find your favorite article in the paper.
Find an "anchor word," something that stands out to you. This will help you create the theme of the poem.
Look for other words that you can connect to your anchor.
Underline, circle, or box in the words you're thinking of using.
Once you found

The speaker’s voice in “Snapping Beans” by Lisa Parker seems to be like he or she is hiding something from their grandmother. This poem has more of a sad type of mood. The words in the poem seem to flow freely. The speaker seems to have come home from school up North. I would suppose that this is because he or she is in college.…

A story, a novel, a writing, a poem- all many different ways that authors compose their thoughts into writing. While may keep private self thinking journals others write to be heard. For instance, Phillis Wheatley is an author that uses her words to make sound. In her poem the “Niobe in Distress for her Children slain by Apollo”, Wheatley uses a bold tone in a creative way to share her introspection. First and foremost, the most interesting part about Wheatley’s poem is how she sets up her tone in the beginning of the story.…

Lauren Tarshis’ drama and Ray Bradbury’s short story both use different approaches to convey a similar theme in “The Day Mrs.Parks was Arrested” and “All Summer in a Day” To prove this I have a line or two from “The Day Mrs.Parks was arrested and “All Summer in a Day”. “Policeman: Why didn’t you stand up?Mrs. Parks: Why do you all push us around? Policeman: I don't know. But the law is the law, and you are under arrest.”…

The novel Ordinary People written by Judith Guest, in my opinion, was an exceptional book. I felt as if I was the main character, Conrad Jennings, as the story developed. As his day progressed he showed his inner thoughts in great detail which was not like the Film. The film showed him having flashbacks and nightmares of how he was feeling which I did care for as much. I enjoyed reading how he was feeling in that exact moment instead of visually seeing flashbacks of the tragedy with his brother.…

In these persona poems, the poets put themselves in the shoes of powerful fictional figures and speak as them. The characters come from a wide range of literary texts--from greek mythology to a novel about vikings to Star Wars and Game of Thrones--but all have in common a powerful voice.
