The Second Manassas: The False Retreat The Union drove forward as they saw a gap in the battle, only after this moment did they find this method as a false retreat. This tactic was used on August 28 - 30, 1862 in the Second Manassas, commonly known as the Second Battle of Bull Run. In this battle, Robert E. Lee sent Stonewall Jackson to battle Pope. He wins with a strong strategy that lets the Union know of his strength. The Second Manassas was a very influential battle for many reasons. First, it crushed the Union and led them back to Bull Run. (“Second Manassas Battle Facts and Summary”). This means they were beaten and had to retreat to survive while the Confederates got to move. Secondly, this gave the Confederacy overconfidence. Because the Confederacy had won, they were confident and strong in spirit for the war, unlike the North at this time. The Union had over 14,000 casualties and while the Confederates won they still suffered over 7,000 casualties. As shown in a letter written by a soldier, “There was (said to be) about 1800 wounded and sick here when I came, but they are being sent off rapidly and the number is now much reduced – Over 100 have been buried in one graveyard here and I saw four graves open at one time here” (Hollingsworth). As shown in this letter many people were wounded on both sides. So many, there was not enough space for some to be buried and some of the wounded were taken away. This was after the First Battle of Bull Run, the first major battle. Up to this point, never had there been this many casualties in the civil war.
