Second Language Classroom Observation

In the classroom I was observing, which was second period there were only 23 kids while in the third period only 21, and then fifth period had exactly 20 students. The class I focused much more on was third period, and everyone single one of them was Hispanic. The gender in the classroom was 13 girls and 8 boys. Most of them were native English language learners, with only one ELL learner in the intermediate level from the teacher’s information. Only one student needed special accommodations and what he used was various visuals to help the student grasp the concept. The teacher would rephrase some of the complex words into an easier way for the student. When providing handouts for him, the teacher rephrased the whole questions and introduced more maps and pictures to make it much …show more content…
He was not very motivated in my opinion to learn and I caught him several times talking about just going to the oil refineries, that he did not need school to work. The whole classroom, though, in a whole was motivated to learn, especially the young girls. They were more attentive and responded to questions and talked about what colleges they were interested in. One great way they were motivated was by Bernie Sanders because the professor would show videos about him and many of the students would love hearing him speak elegantly compared to other political figures. They all looked very capable of having the ability to move on to the next level of education, which is college. The boys were very quiet, but it seemed from my view that they knew the answers, but lacked the confidence to speak up. Actually the third period class, as mentioned by my mentor teacher, was that it was a great class that is always eager to learn, but sometimes is quiet. Many of these students, though, showed a remarkable ability to reflect upon their work and setup goals for the next unit
