Sebaceous Gland Research Paper

Decent Essays
The sebaceous gland makes an oil type substance (sebum) that protects our skin and hair from harm and makes them waterproof so they do not dry out. Dead skin cells and too much sebum can clog the follicles causing the bacteria on the skin to grow. Then bacteria that usually exists in small amounts on the face builds up to create acne. Sebum can clog the follicles in multiple ways. Whiteheads occur when the pores are clogged underneath the skin blocking it off from air. Prior to this video, I believed that acne was caused by poor hygiene and an unhealthy diet. I was unaware of the other factors such as dead skin cells and sebum. I assumed that the oil causing acne to occur was produced by oily and fatty foods. The fact is, greasy foods have little to no effect on acne. Eating foods high in oil doesn't mean that oil can make its way from your intestines to your pores. The different skin blemishes and there causes made me realize that not all acne is preventable. Things like blackheads and whiteheads seem like they can only vanish after they appear. Although there are many ways to help clear up acne. In the past I mainly treated acne by simply washing it and moisturizing but this video helped me realize there was more to it than that. The more you wash your face, the fewer breakouts you'll have. Although I know from prior knowledge that washing your face helps to remove dirt and oil from your pores, washing too much can lead to dryness and irritation, causing more breakouts. Also, avoid scrubbing your face, which can irritate the skin. But I also know that cold and hot water cannot help close pores because of what I’ve learned in this class that is not possible. Pores, the little holes all over your face that are passageways that allow sweat to cool you and sebum to condition your skin, do not have muscles and therefore cannot open and close.
