Seaworld's Orca Problem

SeaWorld’s Orca Problem
Every year, millions of people are drawn to marine parks to see captive animals, including everyone’s favorite, the killer whales, perform in shows for their entertainment. Not many people think about what goes on behind these said shows. What we don't think about is the torture, maltreatment and even forced insemination that goes on in these “wonderful” places.
Captured from the wild
In the open ocean, orcas are smart, cooperative creatures. They work together to find food, survive, and even share very complex bonds in their matrilineal groups. These are amazing creatures, while in the wild, are never rivaled by any other animals. Orcas that are free in the wild are among the fastest swimmers in the ocean, as they usually swim 140 miles in a single day.

SeaWorld feeds their orcas a gelatin mixture made of pig and cow bones, along with the occasional frozen fish. This along with the tiny tanks is seemingly why all orcas at SeaWorld have a collapsed dorsal fin.

Trainers in danger
Over one hundred trainers that have dealt with orcas in captivity have been injured and four known have been killed. SeaWorld is not only torturing these animals, but they are putting their workers in danger as well. In the wild, orcas have never killed anyone and there have never been any violent attacks or injuries. These animals act out in this way because they are tired of being treated this way.

Conclusion SeaWorld is a problem. These animals should have rights. These animals are beautiful creatures that deserve to not have to live their lives in these tiny concrete tanks, because they have not done anything wrong. It would be unreasonable for me to say SeaWorld should shut down their parks, because they provide jobs for many people. If SeaWorld were to turn their parks into rehabilitation sanctuaries for injured and sick animals, it would be a much better use of their money and

Blackfish tells us there are over 70 cases regarding trainer deaths caused by orcas. Each SeaWorld Park holds over 600 pages of recalling unanticipated behaviors of the orcas towards the trainers and nearly 100 of those pages includes incidents of the whales physically hurting the trainers. In SeaWorld Orlando Florida on February 24, 2010; Dawn Brancheau was killed by one of their bull whales, Tilikum, also known as Tilli. She suffered from a broken jaw, a dislocated elbow, a fractured vertebra, and so much more.…

Which then lead to the incident. In an article, i read the abstract just and it talked about how it wasn’t until t5his incident trainers swam and trained with the whales ( Benjamin Wallace, Seaworld Breached). While doing some research I found an article about Seaworld and what happens to killer whales there, that usually won’t happen. On average, an Orca’s life span is usually 30-50 years, while in captivity 15 years( 8 Reasons Orcas Don’t Belong at Seaworld, PETA). Like in the documentary it is talked about the collapsed dorsal fin, how that just a little indicator the it isn’t a healthy environment( Blackfish, killer whale expert scientist).…

Orcas endure so much emotional and physical trauma, that they chew on bars to escape. This says a lot about their living conditions without having to say anything at all. The Orcas end up breaking their teeth and have to go through a gruesome procedure without anesthesia to fix it. Seaworld is located in very hot places like Texas and Florida, so imagine being outside in the hot blazing sun day in and day out. Their Tanks are so shallow that they develop these painful and blistering sunburns.…

Yes they live in these conditions, but that is the trade off for having such clean tanks and easy access to medical treatment. According to “5 Arguments For Keeping Captive Cetaceans,” “The temperature and salinity of the water is controlled. After decades of this, plunging these animals back into the oceans could likely be a death sentence.” The orcas are used to the clean regulated water of their tanks, not the polluted water of the ocean; it might take months of slowly making the water less regulated to get the whales used to ocean water before they could be released. Seaworld is also expanding the orcas’ living condition - increasing the size of the habitats, and adding more enrichment programs for the…

Many of the orcas have chewed the metal bars of their tanks due to stress. This wears down their teeth, which will only worsen. The dental pulp, the living tissue of their teeth, is exposed and can attract germs, which may lead to heart problems, pneumonia, sepsis, and death. Also, Dr. Ginneken says that less than 1% of orcas in the wild have collapsed dorsal fins, but in captivity, all male orcas have collapsed dorsal fins, due to stress and the lack of space. Collapsed dorsal fins are caused by the orca slowly ‘circle-swimming’, instead of straight and fast like they would in the wild.…

Captive orcas show signs of depression, anxiety, and aggression. This is a direct result of living in small spaces with nowhere to escape, forced to interact with other whales and people, being isolated, and so much more. These massive creatures in captivity do not live a normal lifestyle and this is shown. Evidence of anxiety and aggression includes noticeable changes on the body; a collapsed dorsal fin, bite marks, and "raking". As said by Amber Noel in her article reviewing the documentary Blackfish, “Raking is exactly what it sounds like, one orca drags their teeth across another’s body.…

The tanks at SeaWorld are also a hazard to the trainers. Large companies such as Mattel and Southwest Airlines dropped contracts with SeaWorld (Roony). The opposing side claims that having orcas in captivity helps humans learn more about the creatures. The problem with that argument is that humans are not learning about the natural habits of an orca. A veteran marine-mammal researcher said, “If SeaWorld didn’t exist, would our understanding of wild killer whales be significantly reduced? I think the answer to that is no, it would not (Raja).”…

The documentary Blackfish brings to the public attention the aggressive behaviors displayed by killer whales in captivity. In particular, they focus on an orca by the name of Tilikum held in captivity, by Sealand and later SeaWorld, for close to three decades. Tilikum has caused the death of three people, during his time in captivity--- the most recent being that of Dawn Brancheau, an expert trainer for SeaWorld Orlando. Dawn’s death has sparked increased controversy for the popular entertainment park, most of it revolves around the conditions that the orcas live in.…

“SeaWorld reported that a trainer slipped and fell into the water and drowned.” Then eye witnesses reported that this was not how it happened and they switched their story to “that the killer whale pulled her in the water...” (Blackfish). The lies that SeaWorld used at first to explain what had happened reveals that they put in effort to come up with stories that will fool the public so their name will not lose its reputation. After fixing the original story they chose to bring the blame on her saying her pony tail is what caused the orca to be aggressive.…
