Seaworld Testing Experience

Improved Essays
This is the story of one of my SeaWorld camps and when I was able to take the trainer test. The specific day was Thursday July, 24th. It started off as a very dreary day. The afternoon was hot and muggy, and then the skies began to darken. We were all seated at the Clyde and Seymour “Take Pirate Island” show when the skies opened up. After the show, we were scheduled to do our trainer test in the Blue Horizons show pool, but before the rain had even stopped coming down they cancelled the show. We still had about half an hour before we could do the test, so we all decided to go down to the front of the park and shop. At the front of the park there is a little ice cream shop called “The Polar Parlor”, and me being me, I decided to get a giant …show more content…
They then told us to get into groups of two. My friend James and I paired up together. Finally the test began and the first two went, then the next two, and so on. The first part of the test was to swim freestyle back and forth across the pool. Almost everyone made it back and forth freestyle, and I did great. Everyone was also able to tread water for five minutes with our hands completely over our heads. Now came the last part that made everyone nervous. James and I were the sixth group out of ten and so far no one had made it, only one person had made it but halfway across. It was now our turn and the trainer looked at us and said “If you drop down in the water, you can push off the wall and it will help you.” We dropped into the water, about 7 or 8 feet, and I tried to push off the wall but I couldn’t get a good footing so I just started to swim instead. I felt so relaxed and peaceful under the water, looking down towards the bottom of the pool all I saw was a beautiful blue. The next thing I knew I saw something in front of me and realized that it was the slide out of the other end of the pool. I continued swimming underwater until I got to the other side, once I broke the surface everyone was cheering for me because I made it all the way across the pool. The dolphins were all cheering for me too, they were all excited; communicating with each other and blowing water out of

Swimming is something that almost everyone loves to do. Whether it is in a pool or the ocean, there is a sense of freedom and weightlessness that we can't get anywhere else. As long as you can float in water you shouldn’t really have any fear or worry. If that water is thirty-two degrees on the other hand, then you might start to worry and panic. In the case of Lynne Cox, after the first page it kept me in suspense wondering, was she just going to die of hypothermia?…

Many American families believe that SeaWorld is the best family vacation spot with its many parks all over the country. A typical visit to SeaWorld includes petting dolphins, visiting the aquarium, and being splashed by a majestic Orca. While SeaWorld may seem family-friendly, it definitely is not animal friendly. The tourist attraction, also known as SeaWorld, tortures its animals by ripping them from their homes and families, placing them in pools that might as well be bathtubs. Although families enjoy taking a trip to SeaWorld, they would feel a lot differently if they knew about the constant pain and torture inflicted on SeaWorld’s animals.…

Blackfish released on July 19, 2013 by the producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite. The film shows orcas being trapped in SeaWorld for human entertainment. They are trapped in small swimming pools where they have no place to hide or no place where they can be away from the rest of the orcas. The argument it makes is that orcas should be free and not in pools. The trainers at SeaWorld believe that SeaWorld should close and let all the killer whales live their rest of their life in the ocean where they belong.…

There is a big controversy whether wild life should be held captive or not, Sea World specifically has gotten a lot of bad attention because of all the trainer and killer whale incidents. The way they keep their killer whales contained is also a big part of why Seaworld is getting bad attention. Seaworld has come out with a new commercial telling people that they are not a bad place and how the animals are being treated great there. From what has been said the whales that are kept captive do not have enough space, Animals show signs of aggression and depression when given limited space and little contact with others of their kind. Orcas are a lot like humans, they live in families and when not held in captivity their lifespan is similar to…

After passing the qualifying test I moved on to the municipal lifeguard training program; which is a forty hour training course, a CPR course, and a written test. The hardest part of the program is the final swimming test; to qualify for a pool assignment, candidates must be able to swim 440 yards in 7 minutes and 40 seconds, or 6 minutes and 40 seconds to qualify for a beach assignment. Though out this whole process family and friends are making bets on the outcome. But I knew what the outcome was going to be, I was determined, all that training boiled down to that one moment. Walking to Penn Station I let out a sigh of relief, and hopped on the LIRR to go home.…

Managing to break free from the first set of waves, I pushed forth into the next set of unceasing five foot waves. With legs bent upwards and arms plunging one after the other in a Michael Phelps mentality to finish the race with swift strokes, I kept my body centered in the middle of my seven foot board just like my grandpa positioned me to do so. With a split second to pause and raise my head to look over an oncoming wave, I made out the face of my grandpa, looking back at me from his own board and grinning at the look of my determined face to get out into the line-up. Eminent to the gray-haired “townies” who create their own spindrift from whipping the tail of their boards high in the air, is a homely beach, Rockpiles.…

Because the ninth graders were not allowed to run in this strictly middle school race, I was among the oldest in the group. This was the meet that our team had been preparing for since the beginning of the season, and I prepared even more intensely in the past few days. I had been hydrating well, eating the right foods, and even skipped swim practice the day before to rest my muscles before the meet. This had been the moment that I had been preparing for, and made sacrifices for, and doing well felt like the only option. The pressure was swallowing me up, and pulling me back to the…

SeaWorld, a nautical-themed theme park located in five states across America, owns about half of the 56 orcas living in captivity. The orcas at SeaWorld are trained for entertainment and provide a fantasy-like experience for their visitors, but the terrible conditions at SeaWorld are no fantasy. Orcas are giant mammals that usually live in a vast ocean, but at SeaWorld they live in tanks and must perform for an audience everyday. SeaWorld claims that they use their orcas for important research and that their orcas inspire others to protect nature, but that is not the case. Is it humane for these magnificent mammals to be forced to work in awful conditions?…

Numerous menageries and marine exhibits all over the world have left animals to rot in their cramped cages when they die; left animals unfed, untreated for wounds; or left in areas so minuscule they cause psychological trauma. Seaworld has some of the worst cases of animal cruelty on documentation. One of the most notorious cases of animal cruelty in Seaworld is their care of orcas. Seaworld keeps orcas in containers inadequate for their size. At night, the orcas are placed in a cramped shelter barely big enough for one orca, the next day many orcas are covered with injuries from fights due to stress and from hitting walls.…

As I dive over the ice cold pool, dread and regret fill every moment until my body finally makes contact. For two, sometimes three, hours the situation will only worsen as I repeatedly raise my arms above my head and pull back as hard as possible. Weeks of this pass by, all for the sake of being able to travel through 100 meters of water a few milliseconds faster. Swimming has been my primary sport since the age of eight.…
