Seaworld Persuasive Essay

On February 24th, 2010, SeaWorld’s largest killer whale, a six-ton, 22-foot male known as “Tili”, killed a female killer whale trainer. Dawn Brancheau was a sixteen-year veteran to the park and one of the most experienced trainers they had. This unfortunate situation was the tip of the scale for SeaWorld’s peace. Only three years prior in 2006, another whale grabbed its trainer's foot and dove to the bottom of a 36-foot tank. They surfaced less than a minute later but the whale dove a second time with the trainer for another minute. The trainer escaped with puncture wounds and a broken left foot. Nothing could be further from the truth.” (cite) Not long after the film became popular, SeaWorld released a “fact sheet” that follows along with the movie and points out the errors or exaggerations made. Leaving no stone unturned, the park thoroughly went through the documentary with a fine-toothed comb in order to try and ease some of the tension created by the film. According to SeaWorld, Blackfish employs false and emotionally manipulative sequences concerning the collection and separation of killer whales. “Through stock footage and videos mismatched to the narratives, the film implies that SeaWorld collects killer whales from the wild and separates mothers and calves.” (cite) The park also defends that the film relies on former SeaWorld employees, most of whom have little experience with killer whales, and others who haven’t worked at SeaWorld in nearly 20 years. But how can one be sure it’s the truth versus a lengthy document packed with park information and educational

The propaganda piece Blackfish tried to turn it’s audience against the idea of whales held in captivity, yet the film was ineffective because it utilized emotional appeal, inappropriate diction, and contained many logical fallacies thus alienating those that viewed the piece. Blackfish, commissioned by CNN Films and directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, is a response to the, amongst other things, taking whales from the wild, separating whales from their mothers, and keeping them in a miniscule enclosures, and perhaps most recently the death of SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau. What Blackfish aims to accomplish is emotionally connecting with it’s audience, more likely than not being those who do not know much about orca whales in captivity. Where…

This is where pathos comes in as Blackfish’s main rhetorical component. When interviewing John Crowe, a man who formerly caught orcas for SeaWorld, he addresses the brutalizing accounts of stealing baby orcas from their families in the wild. Crowe describes that the parents of the baby orcas still stayed and kept calling out to their children. He states that, “It’s like kidnapping a kid away from its mother.” Not only in the wild did SeaWorld separate mother and calf, but also in captivity.…

Which then lead to the incident. In an article, i read the abstract just and it talked about how it wasn’t until t5his incident trainers swam and trained with the whales ( Benjamin Wallace, Seaworld Breached). While doing some research I found an article about Seaworld and what happens to killer whales there, that usually won’t happen. On average, an Orca’s life span is usually 30-50 years, while in captivity 15 years( 8 Reasons Orcas Don’t Belong at Seaworld, PETA). Like in the documentary it is talked about the collapsed dorsal fin, how that just a little indicator the it isn’t a healthy environment( Blackfish, killer whale expert scientist).…

At the end of the article "Truth About Blackfish" it is clear that they failed to change anyone 's mind about "Blackfish". Their strategy to lie and manipulate the truth to their readers did not work. As a result Sea World has damaged its own credibility and image to their readers. It is possible that "Blackfish" is manipulative with the footage sequences. However in the argument of whether or not Killer Whales are hurt by being in captivity "Blackfish" still makes the better…

She effectively uses ethos, logos, and pathos appeals to prove that orca whales are treated inhumanely and show they can become aggressive towards people when being held in captivity. The documentary Blackfish features testimonies, interviews, and videos that provide credibility and prove, through an ethos appeal, that these orcas are not meant to be held captive, but instead born to live in the wild. John Crowe, a diver who captured whales for SeaWorld, spoke about his very own experience with the captivity of orcas. In his interview, he described how he felt guilty and ashamed of what he had done. He said, “It's like kidnapping a little kid away from their mother.”…

Contributing to false authority, as well as invalidating the film’s claim, Blackfish implies through audio and visual effects that certain trainers have more experience than they really do. For instance, Samantha Berg, a former trainer who worked at SeaWorld from 1990 to 1993, and had very limited experience with whales. The film plays a clip of her speaking about doing waterwork with an orca over footage of another trainer interacting with a killer whale, when in actuality, the footage was from 10 years after the end of Samantha Berg’s employment with SeaWorld. To further illustrate the false implications the film makes, Blackfish uses video footage of a former trainer John Hargrove with a bloody face, insinuating that he was injured in an act of whale aggression, when in reality he was injured by making a mistake during a maneuver. In addition, Blackfish uses false and misleading footage to specifically further the movement against the animal handling practices of SeaWorld, and an example of this is when the film discusses the separation of mother and calf, wherein the film uses…

‘Blackfish’, a film on the orcas held captive at SeaWorld, exposes the many horrors that go on behind the scenes at these ‘abusement’ parks. The shocking documentary, directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, was released in 2013. They gathered the following former SeaWorld orca trainers to voice their opinions on captivity and state facts about the incidents and sangers of working at the park: John Hargrove, Samantha Berg, Mark Simmons, Carol Ray, Dean Gomersall, John Jett, Jeffery Vente. Working and ‘swimming with orcas is inherently dangerous’ and the performers were consistently at risk of the killer whales having an episode of aggression. In contrast, the orcas are a danger to themselves and the surrounding whales, and are tortured.…

SeaWorld has made several online statements about the inaccuracy of Blackfish. The most impressive of these statements was a 32-page document outlining many of Blackfish’s inaccuracies with cited evidence. For example, SeaWorld points out how most of the “SeaWorld trainers” interviewed in the film never worked with Tilikum, and how the film uses outdated information and footage to ignore SeaWorld’s modern facilities and protocol. News outlets still unfairly consider SeaWorld a target anyway, because Blackfish appeals to emotion while SeaWorld fights back with facts. Blackfish in news articles is often framed as if the film’s producers are underdogs stepping up against the soulless corporate entity that is SeaWorld.…

SeaWorld wants their fans to believe that their whales are absolutely happy and safe. People all over the world are amazed when they see SeaWorld's "killer whales" so well behaved. With the documentary there also came lots of questions as to if everything seems to be correct and every fact can be backed up with specific evidence to prove that SeaWorld is in fact engaging with their whales the way that Blackfish states. One of the top questions that has remained unanswered is if SeaWorld says that things in Blackfish documentary were false and they used fallacies then why did SeaWorld not offer to give an interview and declined them when they offered? This is something that remains unanswered and so does every other statement stated by these top trainers that used to work at SeaWorld. Another thing that is not clear to the audience of Blackfish is why are there no recent SeaWorld trainers that are currently working with these orcas’ that were interviewed? Even though everyone that was interviewed in Blakfish were ex- orca trainers they still had more than just the facts, they gave specific evidence to back up any claims towards…

I am sure that many of you have seen the recent SeaWorld commercials that address the ongoing controversy about the longevity and health of their whales. It shows clips of staff members that have a very caring and down to Earth appearance, and who are also very passionate about their job. The entire ad is filled with bogus and decieving claims, as well as attempts to relate to the viewers on an emotional level. One particular claim can be invalidated fairly easily when you break it down and carefully examine the wording. If you watch the ad, you will see a SeaWorld veterinarian that makes the claim, "Government research shows they live just as long as whales in the wild!"…

In the beginning of Blackfish a man by the name of Howard Garrett, an orca researcher, talked about how they captured these orcas. He explains that they would find a group of orcas with the babies and follow them.…

In Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s film, Blackfish (2013), Cowperthwaite captures the psychological torture killer whales, specifically Tilikum and Kasatka, face at Sea World after being brutally separated from their families. The film takes us through the journey of captured killer whales becoming mentally unstable and being used for entertainment purposes. This film displays archival footage and interviews with former trainers who had close experiences with killer whales at Sea World. The attacks at Sea World stem from the whales’ separation from their families, the trainer’s demand for the whales to do tricks in solitary confinement, and the punishment done to the whales when their tricks are not properly executed. All major accounts of killer whale attacks on trainers develop through the distress of the whales outside of their natural habitat.…
