Market Analysis

Mission Statement:
Our new team, the Seattle Supersonics will be using a similar mission statement that is relevant to several current NBA teams such as, the Chicago Bulls and the Memphis Grizzlies. The mission of the Seattle Supersonics is “To provide the city of Seattle with a sports entertainment organization that is dedicated to serving the community, the fanbase, employees, and the players.” Through this mission statement, the Supersonics will be able to show the city that they are incorporating all shareholders into the new venture.

Vision Statement:
In addition to the mission statement, we would like to create a vision statement to guide the team 's path to success. Our ideal future state is “Providing, growing,

Seattle’s metropolitan area, however, has over 3.7 million residents, making it the 15th largest. Currently standing as the second largest media market without a professional basketball team, Seattle is certainly in need of a new team. The combination of a large media market and a large population bodes well for a brand-new NBA team in the emerald city.

Looking at the past success of the Seattle Supersonics and its strong fan following, we don’t see any reasons why a new team wouldn’t spark that same interest. All the fans who were left in the dust when the Supersonics moved, will be rejuvenated and able to offer their fan support once again. Based on the yearly attendance numbers for the Seattle Supersonics from the year 2000 to around 2007, we estimate that this new team will generate a yearly attendance upwards of 650,000 people.

Also, creating a new NBA team in Seattle, past fans may not view this team as the real Supersonic team that they loved.

Opportunities:
Since a new NBA team is entering the market, there will be many fans who will be excited about the creation of the team. As mentioned earlier, the prior I-5 rivalry with the Portland Trailblazers can be rekindled and a rivalry can be ignited with their former team the Oklahoma City Thunder. Since the old fans are still around in the area, there is a very high chance that this brand new team can hit that dormant target market.

Threats:
As we discussed in the competitive analysis, there are numerous professional sports teams competing for the same market in Seattle, which can result in revenue loss and can increase competition for fans. In the first few years of the team, they may have on the court struggles due to the youth of the players. This may frighten fans and scare them away from purchasing more team apparel and tickets.

In general, as the sports marketer increases awareness, knowledge, involvement, perceived performance and attractiveness, fans become more identified. As fans become more identified with the team, tendencies to be price sensitive, socially motivated, promotion prone, and variety-seeking with respect to the team are diminished. Sponsors clearly prefer to associate with those organizations that have highly identified fans. Highly identified fans mean more people in the seats, more eyes and ears on broadcasts, and greater loyalty to sponsors who support their favorite team. This is the chief reason that sponsors are willing to pay upwards of $10 million to sponsor NASCAR driving teams.…
