Our past with the Native Americans has been nothing but awful. We pushed them off of their land and deemed it ours, and still have never apologized for it. Our harmful acts against them in the past can easily correlate to the conditions they face today, as they never got a fair chance at life since the Europeans first came to America, continuing on through further centuries. During the 1800s, American settlers forced the Native Americans into white culture, with no regard to their right of a free life. We forced them into reservations, and brutally murdered and hurt many of their people, with the sole reason of greed.…

In elementary school, we are taught--from textbooks like those written by Joy Hakim--that the courageous Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in search of new land and riches then by pure coincidence happened upon America, a new and exotic land of which he befriended and tamed the wild, stupid, and unsophisticated natives. Much like many of the other things we are taught in elementary school, this is far from the truth. Not only did Columbus massacre these native people and eradicate any trace of their culture for no more than either the pursuit of riches or simply the fun of it, but these people were not stupid or unsophisticated--far from it, in fact. Some may even argue that Native Americans were more sophisticated than the Europeans that “discovered” their homes.…

The Cheyenne Native American Dull Knife once said, “All we ask for is to live and live in peace” (332). The quote exemplifies the relationship between the Native Americans and the United States government. The Native Americans did not agree with the American settlers coming into their territory and using their beloved natural resources. As more policies were enacted and more settlers came into the unsettled territories inhabited by the Native Americans, the more likely a violent dispute between the two sides would occur.…

“This land is your land, this land is my land, from California to the New York Island, from the Redwood forests to the Gulfstream waters, this land was made for you and me” (Guthrie). Contrary to the lyrics in “This Land is Your Land” by Woody Guthrie, this land was apparently not made for “you and me.” America was only made for the “me” aspect of the song, “me” being the Americans. Thousands of years ago, the Americas were undiscovered by the Europeans. Now, this land withholds a great country.…

There were many conditions that allowed for early Americans to mistreat the Native American Indians, two of them being the supposedly superior culture of Americans, and the differences in the culture of the Native American Indians. During the time of the Indian removal, Americans had an established government, a set of laws, and advanced technology. They looked at the Native American Indians and saw a people that hunted with bows and arrows, that didn’t have any rules or laws, and that were wild and ruthless, with no government to keep them in check. The reality was that some Native American Indian tribes had recently established a government and adopted a constitution, but the white people of America saw them as uncivilized savages. This allowed…

I totally agree with you on how the natives blindly trusted the US Government and that the government used that to their advantage. by making treaties to win the alliance of native peoples for various wars and then discarding them once the war was over. I also like how you pointed out that the treaties that were made were from the benefit of the United States; however, I think that if the treaties where actually up held and not broken then they could have also benefited in the tribes. I also like how you used some sarcasm in the end when talking about where congress gets it power and I totally agree that their power does not apply to the native tribes.…

The history of Native Americans and settlers in the New World has long been biased towards that of the colonists settling in America. Few people know the extent to which the bias exists and they also don’t stop to consider the perspective of the people that have rightful ownership of the land. What most people do know are the stories of conquest that are often taught in school. These accounts are heavily in favor of the settlers and paint Native Americans as the savage evildoers hell-bent on ruining lives.…
