A January 20 single-car crash in Knox County led to the death of the 19-year-old driver and injuries to the vehicle’s other occupant, a 20-year-old male. Sadly, neither man was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Speed and poor weather conditions are viewed as contributing factors in the crash. The tragedy behind this accident is a reminder that there are certain things that do not mix when it comes to driving.

Speed and Bad Weather

While drivers should never go over the speed limit, bad weather often requires them to slow down even more. If there is snow on the road or the roads are clearly icy, it is important to slow down. Hail and rain can also cause dangerous roads, and they, along with snow, can create visibility issues. Fog is another weather condition to take into consideration. Even really sunny days, if the sun is shining right in your eyes as a driver, may require you to reduce your speed.

A Moving Vehicle and No Seat Belts

While some people find seat belts uncomfortable, or they otherwise do not want to use a seat belt, the fact is that seat belts save lives. They prevent people from being thrown from the vehicle during a crash. You are far more likely to die in a car crash if you are thrown from the vehicle. A seat belt also prevents you from hitting other parts of the vehicle, including the dashboard, and they help to distribute the impact of the crash.

Of course, these are not the only things which do not mix when it comes to driving. Distractions and traffic, alcohol and driving, and sleepiness and long trips are among other things that should not be mixed together when you are driving.
