Anything you do in life contains some element of risk. Sensible people understand that and act accordingly, because most people do not want to be a casualty. Adult drivers should know the probability of risk in driving, and be able to make their own choices as to how best to handle the situation.

Additionally, it was shown that although using seat belts will save some lives, they can also kill or injure others. Because of this, automakers have had to spend hundreds of millions of dollars in damages in lawsuits. Additionally, the seat belt law is a money generating engine for each state, under the guise of trying to save lives. The fact is that the government is telling adults how to live their lives, and charging them if they don’t agree. Since that initial campaign of what is essentially bribery, in the 80’s, law enforcement has been offered millions of dollars in grant money to increase the number of tickets given for seat belt violations.
Secondly, billions of dollars have been spent to support seat belt laws, which has created a huge financial burden to society. However, money is not actually the greatest cost regarding seat belt laws. The greatest cost has been the loss of freedom. The mandatory use of seat belts directly infringes upon the unalienable rights we were supposed to be guaranteed in the Bill of Rights, more specifically, the right of self-determination with regard to one’s own property.
