Given several artifacts and quotations about New England, the culture can be analyzed and dissected to a limit to reveal what was important to the colonists at the time. For instance, in 1662, the Massachusetts Pine Tree Sixpence, a part of their currency, has a picture of a tree stamped on it. When we were discovering more about the New England region, it is evident that the rich forests produced the timber to help with the lumber industry. In addition, since these colonists were located near the ocean, they had an abundance of fish and other sea life. This is shown in the drawing with the men catching fish on the shore.…
My artifact was a small video called “Mama Bear”. The Mama Bear video is from a web site that is called “feedingamericasd.org”. The video is a little more than one minute and we watched some of it with my group. Then I shared with my group what I know about the video and the organization. I have one more artifact that I picked up from the San Diego County office when I went there to social welfare assignment.…
An artifact that would be found if Gulf Shores was rediscovered would be a bible. My bible is just an everyday bible. The same as everyone else's. However my grandpa wrote me a note in my bible. My bible is important to me because it is God’s word.…

"It 's a Beautiful Thing": Art, Culture, History and Humanity in George Orwell 's 1984 In 1984 George Orwell pulls readers into his horrific and at the same time awe- inspiring totalitarian society, dictated by a dystopian political system that builds a world on omnipresent surveillance, public manipulation, oppression, hatred, propaganda and "their sole motive, [which is] the quest for power" (Paul 215) . Due to the unconditional control the party has over Oceania, there is evidently a paucity of beauty, culture and history. Art plays a crucial part of humanity, history and our depiction of the truth.…
Thank you for choosing my school to select three artifacts for a time capsule that will be taken to Mars on your next space mission. I have chose three artifacts that would be significant to the future generation. These three artifacts consist of, a CD, a book, and a phone. Writing an object biography means looking at the object 's history, from the moment it was made to the moment it disappeared, or to the present if the object still exists. Object biographies are passive narratives, because objects are inherently inanimate. An object biography will consequently not look at what the object 'accomplished ' during its lifetime, but rather, how the surroundings of the object transformed it through time. A biography can thus concentrate on several themes, or several changes, that the object went through. These changes can be physical, such as the modification of the appearance of the object, or changes of location.…
Papyrus was first made in Egypt as far back as the fourth millennium BCE. The earliest known papyrus was found in 2012-2013 which dated back to 2560-2550 BCE. Ancient Egyptians were the first to start using papyrus for many reasons but mainly used it for writing. Ancient Egyptian Scribes were the only people allowed to use papyrus paper. Individual Papyrus was made by laying strips of thin papyrus sheets side by side.…
In my art history courses at Southern Methodist University, the concept of spoliated artifacts has arisen in lectures and discussions many times. An idea I found intriguing, I have done quite a bit of reading on the topic, and have found the writings of ancient spolia expert Dale Kinney to be particularly impactful; specifically her chapter, “The Conccept of Spolia” in Conrad Rudolph’s A Companion to Medieval Art (2006). This article has an incredible meticulousness in documenting the proliferation of the reuse of ancient artifacts across Europe in the years after the fall of the Roman Empire, offering a detailed historiography of examples of recontextualized artifacts, but also examines the study of spolia, and the way reuse can be interpreted.…
Question #1 Part A: Anthropologists ask: How do different cultures define art, and what purposes does art serve? Use any type of art which you would like to explain the anthropological perspective on art. Be sure to refer to some key concepts discussed in the class lectures related to art. Part B: The anthropology of art does not treat such artifacts as “exotic objects,” but instead examines them for the roles they play in people’s lives.…
Marine debris is anything from a plastic bag to an aluminum can that made the ocean or beach its home. Whether it was left by a careless beachgoer or a boat dropped it overboard accidently, it is now debris. Litter is another name for it, though that name is more commonly associated with its land counterpart, and it also affects the environment and those inhabiting it. The affects are devastating to the marine life in the oceans with animals such as sea turtles mistaking it for food or getting caught in it and being unable to free itself leading to its death. It also causes for accidental harm like gathering on the top of the water and disrupting sunlight trying to pass through…
AL-Farabi The teacher and the learner: AL-Farabi claims that in order for an individual to become a teacher he must have be of good character, and seeking only the truth. And that none shall be employed except those who are trained in the logical arts. Other characters that should be in a specified teacher are: The mastery of his own art and its rules, the ability to demonstrate all that could be demonstrated, and to guard any distortions that could intrude his art. Al-Farabi is at odds with Al-Ghazali where he claims that learning the Qur’an and its sciences is not a precondition for education.…
Introduction In this paper I will examine the difference between material and non-material culture in my world, identifying ten objects that are part of my regular cultural experience. For each object, I will then identify what aspects of non-material culture (values and beliefs) these objects represent. Finally, I will reveal what this exercise has revealed to you me about my culture. There are clear differences between material and non-material culture, according to Little et.…
