Sears Reflective Essay

I would just like to start this journal by saying how unbelievably proud I am of everyone involved in Sears. This was my first time ever doing something in Sears because I’ve always played on the school hockey team and due to the timing, it’s always on or the other. This being said, while I have been in shows before, I’ve never directed or been involved in the rehearsal process without being in the cast, so seeing the way our cast grew was amazing and awe inspiring. I couldn’t have asked for better people to work with and extremely honoured that I got to work with them. One cast member I would particularly like to highlight is Nicole Shi, who played Meg. I wish I remember what was going through mine and Rebecca’s heads when we cast a grade …show more content…
Directing is completely different than leading a crew or blocking in class. I thought that between all of my past experiences I could patchwork this whole ‘directing’ thing together. I was wrong. I was so wrong. You have your basic plan rehearsals, blocking, and costumes, but I was not expecting the typical ‘director’ questions, like “would my character react like x, y, or z” and in some cases it mattered and others it was a “well let’s try it out” situation. However, the absolute best part of this was leaving the cast to make their own choices and discoveries because that’s what helps them to grow as actors. Take Simran Hansra for example, this girl was full of surprises. She started off fantastic but it turns out that that was just the tip of the iceberg. Even up to a week before show, she was still trying to figure out ways to incorporate new things. The last rehearsal before exams, for example, we were running through the Terminator scene and I look up from writing a note, and she’s hiding behind the chairs. I just remember pointing it out to Rebecca before almost crying because I was laughing so hard. On the first day of rehearsals I couldn’t believe what a great cast we had and I still can’t believe they got even better and completely obliterated our …show more content…
I never knew how stressful it was to just sit in the audience and hope it all goes well. Now I know how my parents feel every hockey game. Anyway, because of the amount of snow days we had the week before shows, I kind of considered the Monday as a sort of dress rehearsal with an audience. Acting wise, there were a few speed bumps but it was mostly a smooth road. Tech wise, it was more like a country road, but that’s okay, because that’s why we get adjudicated on the second night so we had time to fix things. On Wednesday everything pulled together, and while there still were minor mishaps, like a minor issue with a skirt losing its clasp about 15 minutes before show, I’m positive no one in the audience noticed. Luckily, no one face planted because risers during this show. I know I keep repeating this but I can’t say enough how proud I am of everyone and it was amazing watching them

There was no life, energy or enthusiasm portrayed by most of the actors, the plot was all over the place, and everyone and everything was out of sync and off-key. This production was definitely not the best, but even though it was pretty terrible to sit through and watch, the audience was very supportive to their kids that were part of this production and the little kids that attended the show loved it. The older people that were there did not enjoy it at all, they were constantly shifting in their seats, and even a few walked out because they were so bored with the show. I was not impressed at all and I do not blame you if you don’t want to go waste $15 on this show, because it’s not worth your time or…

Joining the New Visions program was one of the wisest decisions I have made. When nurses that I shadow at Unity Hospital express how jealous they are that they didn’t have a program like this when they were in high school, it reminds me to take advantage of this opportunity that not every student receives. I am confident that when I graduate college, I will be able to recollect this program, and how it led me to be successful. I will reminisce about the long hours dedicated to each college-level assignment in determination to receive a grade in the high 90’s, or that moment when I witnessed a five pound baby be born from a cesarean delivery, or even when I stood next to the operating table observing a total knee replacement surgery, while the surgeon and nurses took the time to teach me about what they were doing--an opportunity that not even college nursing students were able to see. Every assignment I completed, conversation I had, and person I met, has transformed me into a more educated and open minded student.…

When I began my sophomore year, I immediately began helping with Shrek The Musical. I knew into this show I’d be seeing all stages of production and many different styles of directing. Through this experience, I’ve learned that different directing methods work for different actors and while a lot of the show was well directed, there were points that if I were the one directing, I would have made different choices regarding certain scenes. Being on staff during the entire process, I know that I’m suppose to believe that every directing decision was the right one. But, now that I see the show up and running in its entirety, there are certain spots that I would have directed differently.…

What does theatre mean to me? As I review the questions provided for me to include in my goal statement, I feel lucky to express how theatre is unique to me and how I structure my everyday life around the dramatic arts. Anytime I act, I relish in the opportunity to be a leader, to help people, and to accomplish my actions with confidence. I started off with this philosophy at an early age and have not forgotten about it since. In my opinion, acting is not solely about the individual’s performance, but about how an individual actor can use their confidence and passion to impact other actors, enhance a production, and inspire the audience.…

Under the Surface The word literacy can cause an overwhelming amount of stress in one's mind. Growing up, I have felt the pressure weigh on me even when I began to think of the word literacy. This thought of pressure and stress has caused me to become unmotivated when being motivated is the key element to reading and writing. It does make me happy when my fellow actors and actresses do not miss a line and hit every cue, so I could imagine that that as a director is that much more exciting. Also, to know what it took to put the whole production together and to see it seem flawless and without difficulty to the audience would be relieving after knowing that I wanted to pull all of my hair out of my head with how frustrated I know I would be unpacking the entire play. The director is with the play before the majority of the ensemble, therefore being the director, I would get to see my vision unfold before my eyes with what could have taken several months to gather together. With great communication skills and the ability to work under pressure comes a great director, and I believe I would excel at…
