Searching For Paradise

Have you ever wanted to live in a time when life was much simpler? In the 1980s, it was such a time. I was excited to read Searching for Paradise as it tells the tale of a young Mike Hogan and his buddies living a carefree lifestyle. Oh, how I wish I were young and carefree again.

Searching for Paradise transported me back to 1984. Mike Hogan and his friends Declan and Lucas are embarking on a new adventure. The boys are in their early twenties. Being a year or two younger than these boys, it made the story relatable to me as a reader.

Mike and his friends had pinpointed locations across the United States where their friends and family lived. This served as a guide for their route from Los Angeles, California to Mike’s hometown Lowell, Massachusetts.

A dystopian is the opposite of a utopia. A utopia is a perfect society where everyone has everything they need, everyone gets along, everyone is happy, and basically life is perfect. A dystopia is the exact opposite of that. People don’t have things they need, people are poor, not happy, not everyone is happy, people are dehumanized, and overall it’s a terrible society to live in. The dystopian world in Ready Player One is comparable to the Holocaust, because they both were dystopias, people were dehumanized, and people forgot what life was.…

My essay is based on Bruna Dantas Lobato’s “Firsthand Account” which is from “The Common” issue 13. In reading the essays and fiction in both issues 12 and 13, I wasn’t looking really at the poems or photos as I am not very creative, I found little to work with. I wanted a piece that I could connect with or relate to and I was unable to or found them difficult to relate to Lowell. I read and skimmed countless pieces, these ranged from “Santa Anita” by Sean Bernard to “Meandering Zone’ by Rachel Pastan. I looked over every essay and piece of fiction in both issues and read a handful but couldn’t find the connection I desired.…

Due to the fact that Halloween was around the corner, I decided it’d be a wise idea to dip my toes into the young-adult horror genre. And, although this may not have been the greatest, Nightfall wasn’t a completely disappointing start. Firstly, the initial premise caught my attention straight away, I found it hard to envisage a world in which the day/night cycle is more than 24 hours, a world where people had to abandon their homes, and move across an ocean just due to it being nighttime. I found myself sometimes thinking “Oh, just wait till morning, then go do what you need to do”, then realising that the characters have to wait 14 years for ‘the morning’, by which time the situation would be completely irrelevant.…

Allegories are always very thought-provoking to read. The book, The Pilgrim’s Progress is a very long, descriptive, and fascinating allegory that was written in 1678 by John Bunyan. It takes the Christian walk, and demonstrates it by having the main Character, Christian, travel a pathway, called the King’s Highway, to the Celestial City, which is Heaven. All of the places and Characters along the way have names that have significant meanings to how they play into the story. I can compare myself, and can identify myself with three characters from the book, The Pilgrim’s Progress: Talkative, Ignorance, and Temporary.…
