Baldwin, describes Sonny who is lost and trying to find himself, but turns to drugs like heroin because, Harlem is a place where many people are using drugs, involved in violence, in and out of prisons. In addition, they feel trapped and lose hope in themselves to try to find their purpose. “And he’d always been a good boy, he hadn’t ever turned hard or evil or disrespectful, the way kids can, so quick, so quick, especially in Harlem (52). This shows that the children who grow up in Harlem, experienced the same cycle of darkness that Harlem caries as well as Sonny, who is trying to find purpose. Baldwin, describes two types of darkness that surrounds the children in Harlem one is “the darkness of their lives, which is now closing in on them.” The second type of darkness is “the darkness of the movies, which had blinded them to that other darkness, and in which they now, vindictively, dreamed, at once more together than they were at any other time, and more alone (52). He was able to share his purpose with others through the music he plays. The music became relatable. “The relationship must be between the musician and his instrument. He has to fill it, this instrument, with the breath of life, his own. He has to make it do what he wants to do.” (71). Sonny had a powerful relationship with music and he was able to tell his story through the music he played. The playing of each instrument are the moments and emotions of each person's life.
