Chapter One: Early Life
On April 13, 1939 in Castledawson, County Derry, in Northern Ireland Seamus Heaney was born. He was born as the eldest child of the family to Patrick and Margaret Heaney. He had eight siblings’ six brothers and two sisters, but unfortunately one of his brothers called Christopher, to whom he has dedicated one of his poems, had passed away at the age of four. When Heaney was eleven he was granted a scholarship from Saint Columb's College in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, so he took it and left his father's farm. As Heaney was growing up, he was introduced to Irish, English, and American literature and exposed to artists such as Patrick Kavanaugh, Robert Frost, and Ted Hughes.

Ireland marked the occasion with a 12-hour broadcast of archived Heaney recordings; it was a true event in the poetry world. It was also announced that Heaney’s titles were two-thirds of the poetry collections sold in the UK the previous year. In the world of contemporary poetry such popularity was almost unheard, and yet in tradition Heaney’s voice is unabashedly grounded. Regardless of technological change or economic collapse, Heaney’s belief in the power of art and poetry offers hope in the face of an increasingly uncertain future. In times of crisis, asked about the value of poetry, Heaney answered it is precisely at such moments that people realize they need more to live than economics: “If poetry and the arts do anything, they can fortify your inner life, your inwardness."(Seamus

Too often than not, we see stories of poets work going undiscovered or underappreciated until they have passed. A variation of this cliche reflects in the style of a documentary titled “Unburying Malcolm Miller”. I attended a screening of the film, and was able to sit down with director o Kevin Carey, along with writer and friend of Miller, Rob Kessler. Each showed obvious passion for the film they created. They spoke of their inspiration, saying the poetry was sadly overlooked during his life , and they wished to get it out into the world as it deserved.…

In tracing how William Butler Yeats influenced Seamus Heaney, it is significant to note similarities in their backgrounds. Yeats was intensely mindful of his role as a national poet/politician representing all Irish. Heaney also evolved into a definitive poet for the entire island. Both transitioned from being primarily Irish poets to world poets as evidenced by their winning of individual Nobel prizes seventy years apart. Like Yeats, Heaney was recognized globally, as likely to lecture at Harvard as to read at Dublin City University.…

Throughout time there have been numerous authors who have come and gone with little to no effect on society. Today, however, we remember an amazing poet named Seamus Heaney, who left a lasting impression on the hearts of many. While the presence of death and rebirth in nature has had a major influence on his work, it is also evident that typical Irish influences are present. In his poems: “Death of a Naturalist,” “Requiem for the Croppies,” “Mid-Term Break” and “Scaffolding” there is indisputable evidence supporting the recurring motif of nature. The role of nature in Heaney’s poems is greatly linked to his Celtic roots.…
