The traditional seal fur trade should be discontinued in order to protect seal pups. If we eliminate seal pups to make clothes, then the whole ecosystem would be destroyed. The main food source of seal pups is fish and if there were no seal pups, then fish, along with other smaller sea animals, would overpopulate. Are we willing to sacrifice our humanity and ecosystem for clothes? However, if we discontinue this traditional seal fur trade, we can reach a compromise. Canadian Seal Hunt The famous Nobel Peace Prize winner, Wangari Maathai once said “Environment and the economy are really both two sides of the same coin. If we cannot sustain our environment, we can not sustain ourselves” This has led me to the belief that the Canadian Seal hunt should not be banned because of the environmental benefits, economical benefits and the health benefits it provides that have been discovered through well developed research. Firstly, the seal hunt is balancing out the ecosystem. Research shows that seals in Newfoundland and Labrador are consuming 250, 000 MT of Turbot, 800, 000 MT of capelin and…

There are very few national debates within the country of Canada that are as prominent as the arguments surrounding the Atlantic seal hunt. The seal hunt is a traditional event that happens annually in the Atlantic provinces of Canada which takes place in the early spring of the year. This annual hunt provides a significant source of income to many of the residents in the Atlantic provinces (Sanger, 1998). The large debate surrounding the topic of the seal hunt is due to the fact that many people believe that the hunt is inhuman and should be stopped. The other side of this debate is that the hunt is not only humane but is also important to the Atlantic provinces and therefore should continue (Vaughan, 2009).…

Popular histories often marginalize First Nations women when discussing the fur trade. However, these women were quite significant and contributed a great deal to the vast and rapid development of colonial fur trading, playing a unique but important role in fur trade. Also, the fur trade itself changed the culture of First Nations women permanently and altered their role in their society. European fur traders first came to Canada early in the 16th century, and by the 19th century their industry was in full swing, as in 1821, the Hudson Bay Company successfully won and merged with its biggest rival—Northwest Company (Carlos and Lewis). While Europeans at first simply came to North America to trade for furs, or hunt them themselves, and returned…

Canadian Seal Hunt played a prominent role in exposing the cruelty involved in fashion industry production. The photo, taken in 1969 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare, was a catalyst that provoked outrage and boycotts of fur products in Canada. The group joined forces with a wide spectrum of animal welfare groups in order to protest the unregulated slaughter of baby seals by Newfoundland and Labrador fishermen. The image in question depicts a seal hunter wielding a club to a baby seal while its mother observes in the background of the photo. This photo went beyond merely creating outrage; it also mobilized activists and inspired acts of political protests that shaped the animal rights movement.…

The ringed seal is a key sentinel species for mercury (Hg) contamination in Arctic marine ecosystems. The total mercury concentrations in Arctic ringed seals’ muscle were determined using a cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (CVAFS) instrument. The total mercury concentrations in high ice cover years (2003, 2004 and 2005) were significantly higher than the low ice cover years (2011 and 2012). This suggests that the change in ice-cover significantly changes the total mercury concentrations in the Arctic Ocean due to loss of methylmercury (MeHg) through photodemethylation. The mercury concentrations were increased with age in male ringed seals whereas there is no such trend in female.…

During the summer of 2009, Cline found herself at a Kmart and purchased seven pairs of identical looking canvas flats for $7.
