My first day on the Seahawk has been anything like a pleasant cruise down the River Thames. I woke up in that cramped box called a room. It is rodent and insect infested (Wortis 18). It has such a low ceiling that when I awakened this morning I hit my head on it. I was planning on leaving the ship except when I went to the deck we were in open sea. Once the crew was lined up a man dressed in fine clothes, whom I thought to be Captain Jaggery, walked and stood next

Bobbing and weaving through crowds of worried parents, children, and loved ones, my anxiety worsened at the thought that I might not make it off this ship alive. I needed to know some details of what is going on, therefore I’m making my way to the captain’s headquarters. If I tell him that I know his daughter, even if I believe she’s eerie, which I won’t mention, he might feel more open to informing me on what’s going on. Just a few feet away from the captain’s living space, I hear the wails of pain. I could not tell if they were due to physical or emotional pain, but whatever was going on, it just makes me more frightened.…

When I look around, all I see is the endless blue sea. Sorry, I couldn’t write a letter to you faster, but I could not write on the boat. On the boat, everyday it was the same thing all over and over. The blue sea stretched for over 100 billion miles in every direction, that was the only thing we saw and nothing else. The blatant smell of saltwater is all we could smell, together with the acrid taste of moldy bread is the only thing we tasted.…

I look up at the sky, and close my eyes. Attempting to imagine myself anywhere else, but on an old stale ship filled with 30 other men for what seemed like decades, although, in reality only measures up to a few weeks. I give up my feeble attempt at day dreaming, open my eyes and look around. Taking in the smells of the salty see and a vague underlying odor of sweat and musk that has accumulated along this never ending journey. But I must admit, I would take this stinky old ship over the guillotine back at home any day.…

That one particular morning, the sun shined incredibly bright and the sky was clear of clouds. There was the slightest breeze that made the extreme heat just a little bit more tolerable. All the commander and lieutenants and the people that worked for them were gathered in the commons of the Rock Island Arsenal that my father was about to take command of. My dad was dressed in his white dress uniform that displayed all his medals and ribbons on the left side of his chest. Remembering my agonizing journey to America is painful, but I will never forget it. It was a day like any other: I got up, ate breakfast, said farewell to my family, and went out hunting. Walking through the familiar, verdant forest that I knew so well, it never occurred to me that I would ever be taken away from everything that I knew and loved. I had heard of men, women, and children being dragged away and never seen again, with their families believing that they were dead.…
