Sea Shepherd’s aim is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of marine wildlife, in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. They achieved this in the 2009/2010 campaign Operation Waltzing Matilda. The Sea Shepherd fleet followed the Japanese whaling fleet for three weeks and not a single whale was killed. The operation was hailed as a success, and cost Japan tens of millions of dollars in loses.

Sea Shepherd’s role is to investigate, document and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities at sea. They worked with the International Whaling Commission (IWC) to come to a resolution with support from the United States and Australia in 2014. This, and Australia taking Japan to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) lead to Japan losing their whaling permits.
