Sea Otters

After months of research, I have figured out that some animals use tools to their advantage. Sea otters are an example of that. A major part of the sea otter’s diet is the hard shelled abalone. As you can see from the name, they have a hard shell. The creature lives on the water's surface. The otters cannot crack this shell on their own, so they use tools. I have video evidence to support my conclusion. After watching their behavior for months on end, I have concluded that the otters find flat rocks and bang the abalone against the rock until it cracks open. To obtain the materials, the otter dives underwater and gets a rock and an abalone. Then, while surfacing, he rolls over on his back, places the rock on his chest, and hammers away until

In the past year researchers have discovered that the Homarus americanus consume fresh food as their primary food source which includes clams, fish, mussels, crabs, sea urchins, starfish, marine worms, shrimp, plants such as eel-grass and algae, carrion just like the blue crab, and sometimes other lobsters! The Homarus americanus have two claws that are used for acquiring food and consuming the aliment. One of the claws is used to crush shells and animals with hardened outsides such as clams and muscles to obtain some of the meat inside. The other claw is referred to as the feeder claw or pincher which is more maneuverable and transfers the aliment to its mouth. The Homarus americanis consume food by positioning its mouth close to its prey which is how lobsters with omitted appendages consume their victims!…

Crack! The shell of an abalone breaks upon a rock after a sea otter repeatedly bangs the shell against the rock in order to retrieve the meat inside of it. Conducting an observation that validates sea otters’ use of tools would have to include the time and duration of the observation, the number of specimens to be observed, and a method of observation. The time and duration of the observation of the animal is a crucial element in the experiment. In “The Great Crow Fallacy,” the author states, “Cristol’s study was based on more than a couple of random observations.…

    1) After looking at the graphs in Figures 3 and 4, it is obvious that killer whales are the cause behind the deaths of a large amount of sea otters. Despite the data for Figure 3 showing all sea otter the researchers encountered, while the data for Figure 4 showing sea otters with radio tags, both figures still show a drastic decrease in sea otter population with the only main difference between Kulak Bay and Clam Lagoon being the ease of access that killer whales have to the areas. The researchers looked at 2 different sets of data because they wanted to show the general decline in the population in figure 3 and then show a more specific set of otters to show that the general decline was not because of human error. By having figure 4 focus on…

(Tools) The origin of tools was nothing more than simple rocks that were broken down slightly. They had very little dimension to them, having no real purpose. They were used to kill and maim animals but were not as precise as more modernized societies. This is where the most difference is shown between the hominid species.…

History cannot be defined by the story of an individual; however, one person’s story can attempt to influence history, often through print. Via publishing their own narratives, Bibb and Otter both expressed their sentiment for broad influence, to varying success. Bibb leverages legal and religious debates to appeal to rational Northerners and poor whites, while Otter markets his wilder and more violent lifestyle towards his jolly fellow brethren and those fascinated or disgusted by his multitudes of amoral sprees through a series of short stories. Throughout his entire narrative, Bibb repeatedly references “All-wise Creator” [17], and “common law” [24], nods to God and legality, to decry and expose the hypocrisy of slavery, addressing both…

According to the article “Search for the Missing Sea Otters: An Ecological Detective Story” by Mary E. Allen and Mark L. Kuhlmann, the sea otter population has been decreasing at a rapid pace since the 1990’s in Aleutian, Alaska. This is demonstrated by article “What Could be the Cause of Decreasing Otter Numbers” which states that in 1997, the decline of the sea otter population had increased to about 90%. They hypothesize that the decrease in the sea otter population has been caused by their predator, the killer whale because the sea otter’s bodies do not come ashore. The evidence suggests that killer whales are eating the sea otters because in the text “What Predator Could be Causing the Large Decrease in Otter Numbers”…

The reading states that the pollution hypothesis seemed the more likely cause for sea otter decline and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor states that predation hypothesis is the most likely cause of the sea otter decline and refutes each of the authors' reasons. First, the reading states that increasing in levels of chemicals could decrease the otters' resistance cause infections to life-threatening infections and death to sea otters. The professor opposes this point by saying that this point is weakened because people could not find dead sea otters on beaches.…

The author of the reading believes that environmental pollution has the major role in this case. He argues that attacks by predators may be another cause, but he believes usually they hunt larger animals. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the reading.…

A keystone species play a far more important role than it’s relative abundance suggests. These species are the center pieces of their given communities and without them their ecosystem and habitat will fall apart. Keystones species are generally found in low numbers are often apex predators that control distribution and population, but are not limited to food sources, mutualistic species, and different providers. Some of these species are even ecosystem engineers that create or maintain habitats for other species. Two of the most amazing keystone species are the sea otter and the American alligator.…
