Sea Otter Research Paper

Decent Essays
Maybe animals are smarter than we think. For example when we have to crack a nut we use a nutcracker, but animals don't have things like that so they have to improvise. The sea otter does.

A group of scientist including myself have went to study the sea otter and how they function without the advantages we have. Sea otters snack on a sea snail called abalone. But the abalones shell if very hard and often not easy to break. We spotted a sea otter one day and it was laying flat on its back with a rock in one hand and a abalone on its belly. The otter began beating the abalone and cracked the shell and was able to feast. Our conclusion was, animals can improvise and they have the brains to find out how to function without tools. ] Do you think animals are intelligent? Using the two articles “Animal Snoops” and “How smart are animals” I can infer that animals are intelligent. I think this because in the article “Animal Snoops”, it says that animals eavesdrop on their prey so they can get their food. I also think that animals are intelligent because in the article “How smart are animals” it says that they can learn to solve a problem using motions in front of them. That's two things that support my statement that animals are very intelligent.…

History cannot be defined by the story of an individual; however, one person’s story can attempt to influence history, often through print. Via publishing their own narratives, Bibb and Otter both expressed their sentiment for broad influence, to varying success. Bibb leverages legal and religious debates to appeal to rational Northerners and poor whites, while Otter markets his wilder and more violent lifestyle towards his jolly fellow brethren and those fascinated or disgusted by his multitudes of amoral sprees through a series of short stories. Throughout his entire narrative, Bibb repeatedly references “All-wise Creator” [17], and “common law” [24], nods to God and legality, to decry and expose the hypocrisy of slavery, addressing both…

For this assignment, I read a scientific journal article about North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) observations around the Bay Area. The questions being investigated were “Are river otters returning to the Bay Area?” and “What factors are affecting the river otter population?” To gather information, the scientists used three methods– they launched a citizen-science investigation called “Otter Spotter”, field investigations, and focal study sites with cameras. As a result of these procedures, there were 646 citizen reports submitted between 2012-2013, and 2,050 videos recorded from the focal study sites.…

The reading states that the pollution hypothesis seemed the more likely cause for sea otter decline and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor states that predation hypothesis is the most likely cause of the sea otter decline and refutes each of the authors' reasons. First, the reading states that increasing in levels of chemicals could decrease the otters' resistance cause infections to life-threatening infections and death to sea otters. The professor opposes this point by saying that this point is weakened because people could not find dead sea otters on beaches.…

In “Hooked on a Myth”, Victoria Braithwaite says Are Nonhuman animals Conscious? I agree with her argument that fish feel pain and that fish are conscious, but I feel like she could’ve taken the argument a lot further than what she did. She talks about how fish feel pain and she uses the evidence of how they injected bee venom under the skin of the trout . When the fish started to feel the bee venom their gills beat faster, they rub the affected area on the walls of their tank, and lose interest in food, but when they are given the the painkillers they start to act normal again.…

Issue Based Research The article “An Argument for Animal Rights” by V. Vachula supports animal rights. Vachula believes this issue should be a moral concern. Gary Miranda 's poem "The Noon of Everything" uses mammals to metaphorically explains the realities of how delicate and cruel life can be. Sometimes, we can find ourselves encountering difficult situations. Sometimes it’s because we didn’t approach things with caution, we looked for it, or perhaps it could just be an uncontrollable thing that life tends to throw at you from time to time. Miranda does a well job of using animals and their natural instincts to explain how life is.…

A keystone species play a far more important role than it’s relative abundance suggests. These species are the center pieces of their given communities and without them their ecosystem and habitat will fall apart. Keystones species are generally found in low numbers are often apex predators that control distribution and population, but are not limited to food sources, mutualistic species, and different providers. Some of these species are even ecosystem engineers that create or maintain habitats for other species. Two of the most amazing keystone species are the sea otter and the American alligator.…
