This book is about a boy named Tom Carroll, when Tom was a teenager his father died in the civil war. After Tom’s father died he joined in the civil war to help his family. He got a job at the ironworks and became one of the first people to build an iron submarine. The submarine was named Monitor. It was going to go up against the other submarine that was named Sea Monster. While Tom’s working at the ironworks confederate spies that offer him money to tell them about the submarine. But Tom refused to tell them about the ship. After Tom escaped the spies he found himself living on the ship. The final adjustments were made the ship was ready to go under water and battle with its opponent. The captain of the ship was John Ericsson.
