In her article, Amy Tan talks about how she talk different types of English around different people. For example to her mom she would talk a simpler English than she would to other people because her mom wasn’t the best at speaking this language. Tan would speak simpler sentences and didn’t use really big words when she spoke to her mother. Since her mother spoke “broken English” her own daughter was ashamed of her English and this limited the way she saw her mother. Due to how her mother spoke, her mother would face discrimination in many ways, for example, her stockbroker wouldn’t give her the money she earned and the hospital wasn’t willing to look for her CAT scan. Eventually she got both these items, but only because her daughter Amy Tan had to talk for her on the phone because she spoke perfect English. This doesn’t sound fair because Tan’s mother shouldn’t have to face this type of discrimination just because she doesn’t speak English as well as other people. Tan is a bit unfair when she says that she was ashamed of her mother by the way she spoke because her mother isn’t from the U.S so it is harder for her to speak and learn the native language.
