Scylla As The Source For The Odyssey

Decent Essays
The eBook "Odyssey," consists of additional information about the sea monster Scylla that is very useful for my research topic. To summarize, this source presents information about Odysseus' contact with the immortal and petrifying sea monster Scylla on page 262. The author states that Glaucus had once fallen in love with Scylla. Nevertheless, Glaucus traveled to Circe the witch, not knowing that Circe would soon fall in love with him. Moreover, the author states that Circe had poisoned Scylla as a result of her jealousy. As an act of revenge, Scylla devoured sailors that passed by the Straits of Messina. The author of this book is Joyce Moss. The reason why I had chosen this source is because it contains information of not only Scylla, but

In The Odyssey, Odysseus had many personal relationships with the gods, like Poseidon, who wanted him dead, and Athena, who helped him and became his ally. Some other characters in The Odyssey had some mythical elements to them, like Circe, who had magical powers, and Calypso, who was a lesser-known goddess who wanted to make Odysseus her husband. Many of these magical characters are somehow related to the gods. For example,…

Written by Zachary Mason; The Lost Books of the Odyssey was originally published in 2008 by Starcherone Books and then later republished in 2010 by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. The book is made up of 228 pages with 44 chapters. Mason tries to show that the last 44 books of the Odyssey are new stories about Odysseus that show new points that are not in the Odyssey as well as a different way of thinking about the people that appear in this book. Mason wants to show that in these 44 books the warriors, mainly Odysseus, become tired, turn their back on the past, and move on to a new life.…

Odysseus needed to make a choice between Scylla, a six-headed serpent that eats six men, and Charybdis, a whirlpool with teeth that engulfs in everything and spits it out three times a day. “ In Greek mythology, Scylla[2] (/ˈsɪlə/ SIL-ə; Greek: Σκύλλα, pronounced [skýl̚la], Skylla) was a monster that lived on one side of a narrow channel of water, opposite her counterpart Charybdis. The two sides of the strait were within an arrow's range of each other—so close that sailors attempting to avoid Charybdis would pass dangerously close to Scylla and vice versa (Scylla 2017).” Walt Disney had to face the choice of giving up and being a failure compared to working hard no matter what anyone says about it. They each had an all or nothing choice.…

(274). Odysseus chose to face Scylla rather than risk his entire crew to Charybdis. His best six men were snatched by the monster, forcefully flung up to her cliff. Though he had to sacrifice his finest shipmates, he did the right thing, and presumably saved his entire crew. A prime example of when I had to make sacrifices in my middle school odyssey was exam week.…

A hero is anyone who has the ability to express themselves. In the past, the definition of a hero was much more narrow than in the current day. In The Odyssey, Homer shows the reader that disobeying orders can lead to fatal endings. When Odysseus disobeys Circe’s orders, he cost six men their lives. Since he disobeyed orders, he lost the trust of his men who slaughtered the Sun’s cattle. The series of disobedience cost Odysseus to loose his men, his ship, and became a broken man. Even though this is an Epic Poem, these types of scenarios happen all the time.…

Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus fails to tell the complete truth to his men and others as he goes through his journey. He cheats his men into steering him pass Scylla’s cave knowing in advance that he must sacrifice six of his men. It states, “No mention of Scylla- how to fight that nightmare? - for fear the men would panic, desert their oars and huddle down and stow themselves away,” mentioning Odysseus (Homer 203). This action clearly demonstrates his selfish nature and keeps the truth to himself benefiting him to move on with his journey.…

Odysseus chooses to sail into the cave of Scylla, a six-headed monster that eats one man per head to avoid his whole crew being taken under by the whirlpool Charbdis. His good leadership skills force him to make this tough decisions. Odysseus portrays this intelligent characteristic in both the movie and poem.
