Scurvy is a Vitamin C deficiency disease that causes weakness, gum disease known as gingivitis, bruising and rashes of the skin, fatigue, and pain in muscles. Without proper treatment Scurvy can cause death. In the past scurvy was the cause of death in many sailors that would go on long voyages at sea. Sailors only had access to dry salted foods that would last longer, fresh fruits and vegetables would go bad in a short period of time (Talsma and Wijkmans. 2016). Today scurvy affects people in third world undeveloped countries due to malnutrition, the elderly and people with eating disorders are also at risk due to their diet choices ( Talsma and Wijkmans.2016).
