The scruff is the loose skin presents behind the animal’s neck. Grasping an animal by the scruff of its neck promotes submissive behaviour. This is natural behaviour that is learned by kittens and pups during the neonatal period. Scuffing is used by mother to pick up her babies. As the youngster is lifted off the ground, it automatically becomes limp and appears immobilised as it is being carried. As the animal ages, he will continue to be submissive when held by scruff.
Scuffing is used as a form of communication between animals and is an indication of dominance. Ex. 2 dogs fighting-the dominant dog may grab the other one by the scruff, telling that he is the dominant one.
