Scrooge In Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol

A Christmas carol

A Christmas carol starts off with the author showing the reader that Scrooge is a bad person. For example, at one point in stave one Scrooge is described as a "cuvits old sinner" and also Dickens writes "no one stopped him in the street to say, my dear Scrooge, how are you?" This shows that he has been so horrible to everyone they have all given up on trying to be friendly to him. Also when his uncle comes to visit him and invites him over for Christmas dinner Scrooge says "good afternoon" in a tone that shows he wishes Fred (his nephew) to leave and stop being nice and interacting with Scrooge.

Stave two starts with Scrooge coming home to his big lonely house by himself but when he comes to the door the door knocker looks exactly like his only friend Marley who died seven years ago on Christmas Eve. Scrooge falls over backwards but when he gets back up the door knocker is back to normal he goes into his room and is greeted by the ghost of Marley who tells him he will be visited by three ghosts and if he doesn't change then when he dies he will have a big chain around him for all eternity. Then the ghost of Christmas past comes and shows Scrooge parts of his past before he became horrible and after to show him how much of a different I'm resign he had on everybody.

He starts to comprehend his harsh behaviours and asks the spirit to 'conduct [him] where you will. I went forth last night on compulsion, and I learnt a lesson…let me profit by it.' The spirit, through Dickens, transports Scrooge to view an affectionate scene during Christmas with the Cratchits, where Tiny Tim's feeble self is seated next to his father. Scrooge feels miserable for the family even though they are 'happy [and] grateful' because it was Christmas time and are always 'pleased with one another and contented with the time'. Dickens, through the Spirit of Christmas Present, has also used caricatures to juxtapose with Scrooge's characterization by revealing that even though on the 'dismal reef of sunken rocks' and in isolation, the lonely men at the lighthouse still 'wished each other Merry Christmas…and struck up a sturdy song', which shows Scrooge that no matter where people are, Christmas is a time for…

In the poem, “Who is Ebenezer Scrooge?” By Simone Brooklyn, she is trying to convey the concept that our own selves tend to assume what other people are like without genuinely knowing who they really are by asking the public in respect to the main character, is he really who people assume him to be? Thinking about him in a positive way, however, asking, again, the audience if everything we believed about him was true. There’s only a couple of similarities between these two pieces of literature.…

Dickens makes a positive aura around the Christmas feeling as of Stave 1, he makes the Stave full of energy as when Scrooge wakes up he is suddenly buzzing with energy and is as “light as a feather” and runs to the window where a young boy is shocked to know that Scrooge doesn’t know what day it is. Scrooge pays the boy to get the poultries and to buy the prize turkey which he delivers to Bob Cratchits as anonymous. The Stave is significant to the story as it shows that if someone as miserly as Scrooge can change it means that anyone can change which is what Dickens wants the adults as well as children who read the book so that they can change the way they behave to people. Dickens shows what the readers how it is like to be living in a poor family and is more or less basing the book on his own experience in his life. Scrooge evidently has become a happier person as Dickens shows by pretending to be angry with Bob Cratchit for being late…

When Scrooge returns home he sees the ghost of Marley in his door, but he doesn’t believe in ghosts. He then goes inside, where light is almost nonexistent and it is only Scrooge in his home. He is isolated in the dark when he is in his own home. While getting ready for bed Marley’s ghost appears to him while bound in chains of money, want, and…

Scrooge is presented as a lonely character who has little left in life. He is often linked to cold and darkness, perhaps linking to the demons he faces and how he presents them to others coming across as a moody, melancholy man. He has a fixation with money and how no money should be given away. Scrooge is similar to a villain in fairy tales which may be where Dickens got his character from.…

Christmas is a Christian celebration of the birth of Christ, though it also encompasses Greek, Roman and pagan traditions of giving gifts and feasting around the Winter Solstice. It is a time when families and friends come together to share food and exchange gifts (web). In How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss and A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, the main characters, the Grinch and Ebenezer Scrooge, are similar to each other in many ways such as their awful personality. The Grinch is a green hairy who is very greedy, stingy, and a little evil creature. He wants nothing to do with the Whos, hates Christmas, and wants the Who 's Christmas spirit to be gone.…

In the beginning of the novel, the reader views’ Scrooge as a very hateful cold person, who does not like Christmas because it is a time of the year people want handouts for the needy. Being the heartless wrench that he is he tells two gentlemen who want money for the needy “If they would rather die they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population” (Dickens 16). This quote will later come back to haunt Scrooge when he is introduced to Tiny Tim by the second spirit. Another example, of the survival of the fittest theory, is when Scrooge displays his coldness to his nephew, who stops by to visit him, on Christmas Eve by saying, “What right have you to be merry? What reason have you to be merry?…

This cold and dark apparition leads him through the icy streets of London, it shows Scrooge several scenes of people. The foremost scene being a cluster of businessmen discussing the death of a fellow wealthy businessman in town and where his money is going. Their main topic of conversation is his money, whether or not they plan to go to his funeral is merely a secondary thought. They are his comrades, and all that’s in their minds are thoughts of greed. The second scene shown to Scrooge is a foul shop in the backstreets of London, where several vagabonds are selling this same businessman’s belongings, which they stole directly from his home while he was dead in bed.…
